Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your coffee maker.
Daily Cleaning
- Unplug: Always unplug the coffee maker before cleaning.
- Discard Grounds: Remove the filter basket and discard used coffee grounds and paper filter.
- Wash Removable Parts: Wash the carafe, filter basket, and permanent filter (if used) in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. These parts are generally top-rack dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended for longevity.
- Wipe Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the coffee maker with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
- Clean Warming Plate: Wipe the warming plate with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive materials.
- Dry: Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembling or storing.
Descaling (Mineral Deposit Removal)
Mineral deposits (calcium) can build up in your coffee maker over time, affecting performance. Descale every 2-4 weeks, depending on water hardness.
- Prepare Solution: Fill the water reservoir with a mixture of white vinegar and cold water. A common ratio is 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. For example, 4 cups vinegar to 8 cups water.
- Run Half Cycle: Place the empty carafe on the warming plate. Start a brewing cycle. After about half the solution has brewed through, turn off the coffee maker.
- Soak: Let the coffee maker soak for at least 15 minutes to allow the vinegar to work on the deposits.
- Complete Cycle: Turn the coffee maker back on and let the remaining solution brew through.
- Rinse Cycles: Discard the vinegar solution. Fill the water reservoir with fresh, cold water and run at least two full brewing cycles with only water to rinse out any remaining vinegar taste or smell.
