WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in serious injury or death.
- Always wear heavy-duty gloves when handling the winch rope.
- Never operate the winch with frayed, kinked, or damaged rope.
- Ensure the winch is securely mounted to a structurally sound part of the vehicle.
- Keep hands and clothing clear of the winch drum, fairlead, and rope during operation.
- Do not exceed the winch's rated line pull capacity.
- Use a tree saver strap or anchor point protector when winching from a tree.
- Always use a dampener (e.g., heavy blanket) over the winch rope during recovery to absorb energy in case of breakage.
- Maintain a safe distance from the winch and rope during operation. Use the remote control from a safe vantage point.
- Never use the winch for lifting people or for overhead hoisting.
- Ensure the vehicle's engine is running during winching to maintain battery power.

5. Setup & Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your winch. Ensure your vehicle's mounting location is compatible with the winch's dimensions and mounting pattern (3"x4 7/8" / 76mm x 124mm).
5.1 Mounting the Winch
- Identify a suitable, strong mounting location on your ATV/UTV, typically the front bumper or a dedicated winch plate.
- Use the provided universal mounting plate if your vehicle does not have a pre-drilled winch mount.
- Secure the winch to the mounting plate using appropriate hardware, ensuring all bolts are tightened to manufacturer specifications.
- Attach the fairlead to the vehicle's bumper or winch mount, aligning it with the winch rope's path.
5.2 Wiring Connections
The winch requires a 12V DC power source. Follow the color-coded wiring for correct connections:
- Connect the yellow and blue wires from the solenoid to the corresponding terminals on the winch motor.
- Connect the red wire from the solenoid to the positive (+) terminal of your vehicle's 12V battery.
- Connect the black wire from the solenoid to the negative (-) terminal of your vehicle's 12V battery.
- Ensure all connections are secure and protected from environmental elements using the provided dust plugs.

6. Operating Instructions
Your OPENROAD winch offers both wired and wireless remote control options for flexible and safe operation.
6.1 Remote Control Pairing
If the wireless remote hasn't been used for an extended period, it may need to be re-paired. To do so, approach the winch, turn on the remote switch, and simultaneously press the "In" and "Out" buttons on the remote for 10 seconds to initiate re-pairing.
6.2 Winch Operation Steps
- Ensure the vehicle is securely anchored and the engine is running.
- Disengage the clutch for freespooling to manually pull out the desired length of rope.
- Attach the clevis hook to a secure anchor point (e.g., tree saver strap, recovery point).
- Engage the clutch to lock the drum.
- Place a dampener over the winch rope, midway between the winch and the anchor point.
- Using the wired or wireless remote, slowly begin winching in, ensuring the rope spools evenly and smoothly onto the drum.
- Monitor the winching process, keeping clear of the rope and winch.
- Once the recovery is complete, disengage the clutch, remove the hook, and carefully respool the rope.

7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable performance of your winch.
- Rope Inspection: Regularly inspect the synthetic rope for any signs of fraying, cuts, or damage. Replace the rope if any damage is found.
- Cleanliness: Keep the winch, rope, and fairlead clean from mud, dirt, and debris. Rinse with fresh water after use, especially in harsh conditions.
- Electrical Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections for corrosion or looseness. Clean and tighten as necessary.
- Lubrication: Consult a qualified technician for internal lubrication of the gearbox if required. Do not attempt to lubricate the rope.
- Storage: When not in use, ensure the winch rope is fully spooled and the winch is covered to protect it from UV exposure and weather.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your winch, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
- Winch Not Operating:
- Check battery connections for tightness and corrosion.
- Ensure the vehicle's engine is running and the battery is charged.
- Verify remote control batteries are functional and the remote is paired.
- Inspect the solenoid for proper connections and signs of damage.
- Slow or Weak Operation:
- Check for low battery voltage; ensure the engine is running.
- Ensure the load does not exceed the winch's rated capacity.
- Inspect for excessive friction in the fairlead or rope path.
- Rope Not Spooling Evenly:
- Manually guide the rope during respooling to ensure even layering.
- Avoid winching at extreme angles that cause the rope to pile up on one side of the drum.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, please contact OPENROAD customer support.
