KOZWAY HW300PRO Digital Coating Thickness Gauge

User Manual

Model: HW300PRO | Brand: KOZWAY

1. Introduction

The KOZWAY HW300PRO Digital Coating Thickness Gauge is a precision instrument designed for non-destructive measurement of coating and paint thickness on metal substrates. It utilizes both electromagnetic induction (for ferrous metals) and eddy current effect (for non-ferrous metals) principles, automatically detecting the substrate type. This device is essential for surface treatment quality control in various industries, including manufacturing, metal processing, chemical, and automotive sectors.

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use, setup, calibration, and maintenance of your HW300PRO gauge to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.

6. Setup

6.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open it.
  3. Insert two (2) AAA 1.5V batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Note: Always use fresh batteries for optimal performance. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.

6.2 Powering On/Off

  • To power on, press and hold the Power button (usually marked with a circle and a vertical line) until the display illuminates.
  • To power off, press and hold the Power button again until the display turns off, or the device may automatically shut down after a period of inactivity to conserve battery.

7. Operating Instructions

7.1 Basic Measurement

  1. Ensure the device is powered on and calibrated (see Section 8).
  2. Place the probe firmly and perpendicularly onto the coated surface you wish to measure.
  3. The device will automatically detect the substrate type (ferrous or non-ferrous) and display the coating thickness reading on the screen.
  4. Lift the device from the surface to take another measurement.

7.2 Unit Selection (UM/MILS)

The HW300PRO supports both micrometers (UM) and mils (mils) units. To switch between units:

  • Press the "UM/MM/MILS" button to toggle between the available measurement units. The selected unit will be displayed on the screen.

7.3 Mode Selection (F/NF/AUTO)

The device can operate in automatic mode or specific ferrous/non-ferrous modes.

  • Press the "F/NF" button to cycle through modes:
    • AUTO: Automatically detects the substrate type (ferrous or non-ferrous). This is the recommended default mode.
    • F: Forces the device to measure only on ferrous substrates (e.g., steel, iron).
    • NF: Forces the device to measure only on non-ferrous substrates (e.g., aluminum, copper).

7.4 Backlight Control

  • Press the Light bulb icon button to turn the display backlight on or off. This is useful in low-light conditions.

8. Calibration

Regular calibration ensures the accuracy of your HW300PRO gauge. The device comes with 7 calibration sheets for this purpose.

8.1 Zero Calibration

Zero calibration should be performed on an uncoated, bare metal substrate (ferrous and non-ferrous) that is representative of the material you will be measuring.

  1. Place the gauge's probe firmly on a clean, uncoated ferrous metal surface.
  2. Press the "ZERO CAL" button. The display should show "0.00" or a similar indication of zero.
  3. Repeat the process for a clean, uncoated non-ferrous metal surface.

8.2 Multi-Point Calibration (Using Calibration Sheets)

For enhanced accuracy, especially when measuring specific coating thicknesses, use the provided calibration sheets.

  1. Perform Zero Calibration as described above.
  2. Select a calibration sheet with a known thickness (e.g., 50 UM, 100 UM).
  3. Place the calibration sheet on a bare metal substrate (matching the type you intend to measure).
  4. Place the gauge's probe firmly on the calibration sheet.
  5. Adjust the reading on the gauge to match the known thickness of the calibration sheet using the calibration function (refer to the device's on-screen prompts or specific buttons if available, as this can vary by firmware).
  6. Repeat for other calibration sheets to cover the desired measurement range.

Always calibrate the device in the environment where measurements will be taken, as temperature can affect readings.

9. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Probe Care: Keep the probe tip clean and free from dirt, dust, or paint residue. A dirty probe can lead to inaccurate readings.
  • Storage: Store the device in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for a long period, remove the batteries.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display.

10. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Device does not power on. Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. Check battery polarity; replace with fresh AAA batteries.
Inaccurate readings.
  • Probe tip is dirty.
  • Device not calibrated.
  • Measuring on an unsuitable surface.
  • Incorrect measurement mode selected (F/NF).
  • Clean the probe tip.
  • Perform zero and multi-point calibration (Section 8).
  • Ensure the surface is metal and suitable for measurement.
  • Switch to AUTO mode or the correct F/NF mode.
Display shows "ERR" or similar error. Measurement outside range or sensor issue. Ensure measurement is within 0-2000 UM. Re-calibrate. If error persists, contact support.

11. Customer Support
