Introduction
The Universal Audio Orion Tape Echo pedal is designed to provide the rich, three-dimensional delay effects characteristic of vintage 1970s Maestro Echoplex EP-III tape delays. This compact unit incorporates advanced algorithms to emulate the unique sonic qualities of these classic devices, including their renowned solid-state preamp. It is built for reliable performance and offers versatile controls for shaping your sound.
Setup
Before connecting the Orion Tape Echo pedal, ensure your amplifier and other audio equipment are turned off to prevent any potential damage or loud transients.
Power Connection
The Orion pedal requires a 9V DC power supply (not included) with a center-negative polarity. Connect the power supply to the 9VDC input jack located on the rear of the pedal.
Audio Connections
Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the IN jack on the rear of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable. Connect the OUT jack to your amplifier or next effect pedal in your signal chain using another 1/4-inch instrument cable.

USB Connection
The USB Type-C port on the side of the pedal is used for firmware updates and connecting to Universal Audio's software for additional features or registration. Connect a USB-C cable from the pedal to your computer.

Operating Instructions
The Orion Tape Echo pedal features several controls to shape your delay sound and preamp characteristics.

Controls Overview
- DELAY: Adjusts the delay time, from short slap-back echoes to longer, more expansive repeats.
- MIX: Controls the blend of the dry (unaffected) signal and the wet (effected) signal. Turn clockwise for more delay effect.
- FEEDBACK: Determines the number of repeats. Higher settings result in more repeats, potentially leading to self-oscillation.
- WONK: Introduces subtle to eccentric modulated repeats and tape splice textures, simulating the imperfections of vintage tape machines.
- REC LEVEL: Adjusts the input level to the emulated tape machine. Higher settings can introduce saturation and subtle distortion to the repeats, mimicking the EP-III's preamp characteristics.
TAPE Switch (Mint, Worn, Old)
This three-position toggle switch allows you to select between different emulations of the EP-III tape machine, each offering a distinct sonic character:
- MINT: Provides a clean, well-maintained tape echo sound with minimal degradation.
- WORN: Emulates a tape machine with some wear, introducing subtle artifacts and a slightly darker tone.
- OLD: Replicates a heavily worn tape machine, offering significant sonic degradation, flutter, and a more pronounced vintage character.
Bypass and Preamp Switches
On the rear of the pedal, two mini-toggle switches provide additional configuration options:
- BYPASS (Trails / True):
- Trails: When the effect is disengaged, the delay repeats will naturally decay, creating a smooth transition.
- True: Provides a true bypass, meaning the pedal's circuitry is completely removed from the signal path when disengaged, preserving your dry tone.
- PREAMP (Off / On):
- On: Engages the emulated EP-III solid-state preamp, adding warmth, saturation, and a slight boost to your signal, even when the delay effect is bypassed.
- Off: Disengages the preamp emulation.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Universal Audio Orion Tape Echo pedal, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
- Power Supply: Always use a compatible 9V DC center-negative power supply. Using an incorrect power supply can damage the unit and void the warranty.
- Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for tightness and wear. Loose connections can lead to signal loss or noise.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Orion Tape Echo pedal, try the following steps:
- No Sound:
- Verify all audio cables are securely connected to the correct input and output jacks.
- Ensure the power supply is properly connected and providing power to the pedal.
- Check that your instrument and amplifier are functioning correctly.
- Unexpected Noise/Hum:
- Ensure you are using a regulated 9V DC power supply designed for guitar pedals. Unregulated power supplies can introduce noise.
- Check for faulty or unshielded audio cables.
- Move the pedal away from other electronic devices that might be causing interference.
- Effect Not Engaging:
- Press the footswitch firmly to ensure it engages. The LED indicator should illuminate when the effect is active.
- Check the MIX knob setting; if it's turned fully counter-clockwise, you may not hear the effect.
- Unusual Repeats/Modulation:
- Adjust the WONK control. High settings on the WONK knob are designed to introduce eccentric modulation.
- Experiment with the TAPE switch settings (Mint, Worn, Old) as they inherently affect the character and fidelity of the repeats.
