3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your MPPT solar charge controller. Please follow these steps carefully.

3.1. Connection Order

  1. Connect the Battery: First, connect the battery to the charge controller. Ensure correct polarity. The controller will automatically detect the battery voltage (12V or 24V).
  2. Connect the Solar Panel: Next, connect the solar panel array to the charge controller. Ensure correct polarity. The controller will begin tracking the maximum power point.
  3. Connect the Load (Optional): Finally, connect your DC load to the controller's load terminals.

Important: Always connect the battery first and disconnect the solar panel first when disassembling the system to prevent damage to the controller.

4.2. 4-Stage Charging Process

The controller employs a 4-stage charging algorithm to optimize battery health and lifespan:

  1. Bulk Charging: Charges the battery at maximum current until voltage reaches the absorption setpoint.
  2. Absorption Charging: Maintains constant voltage while current gradually decreases.
  3. Float Charging: Reduces voltage to a lower level to maintain full charge and compensate for self-discharge.
  4. Equalization (for certain battery types): Periodically overcharges the battery to balance cell voltages and prevent sulfation.

5. Troubleshooting

The controller is designed with multiple protection features and can provide warnings for various issues. Refer to the LCD display for fault codes or indicators.

Common Fault Warnings and Solutions:

  • PV Array Open-Circuit: Check connections between solar panels and the controller. Ensure panels are receiving sunlight.
  • Battery Voltage Lower Than 8V: Indicates a severely discharged battery. Charge the battery using an alternative source if possible, or check battery health.
  • Over Voltage: Input voltage from PV or battery is too high. Verify system voltage compatibility and connections.
  • Over Discharged: Battery has been discharged below its safe limit. Disconnect load and charge the battery.
  • Overheating: Controller internal temperature is too high. Ensure adequate ventilation around the controller and check ambient temperature.
  • Overload / Load Short-Circuit: The connected load draws too much current or has a short circuit. Disconnect the load and check its specifications or wiring. The controller may automatically turn off the load in such cases.

If issues persist after following these steps, please contact customer support.

6. Maintenance

The EPEVER MPPT Solar Charge Controller is designed for minimal maintenance. However, regular checks can ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the controller and all connections for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose wiring.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the controller clean and free from dust and debris. Ensure ventilation openings are not blocked. Use a dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Connection Tightness: Check all terminal connections annually to ensure they are secure. Loose connections can cause overheating and damage.
  • Environmental Conditions: Ensure the controller is operating within its specified temperature and humidity ranges.
