5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off
Press and hold the power button (usually marked with a circle and a vertical line) for approximately 3 seconds to turn the multimeter on or off. The display will show a boot-up sequence.
5.2 Function Selection
Rotate the central rotary dial to select the desired measurement function. Use the blue "SELECT" button to toggle between different modes within a single rotary switch position (e.g., AC/DC voltage, resistance/continuity).
5.3 Measurement Functions
- Voltage (AC/DC/Low-Z): Select the appropriate voltage range (V~ for AC, V- for DC, Lo-Z V~ for low impedance AC).
- Current (AC/DC): Select A~ or A- for current measurements. Ensure test leads are connected to the correct current input jacks (10A, mA, or µA).
- Resistance (Ω): Measures electrical resistance.
- Capacitance (F): Measures capacitance. The UT181A has a maximum capacitance range of 60mF.
- Continuity Test: Used to check for open or closed circuits (audible beep for continuity).
- Diode Test: Checks the functionality of diodes.
- Frequency (Hz) / Duty Cycle (%): Measures the frequency and duty cycle of AC signals.
- Temperature (°C/°F): Use the provided temperature adapter and thermocouples for temperature measurements.
- Non-Contact Voltage (NCV): Detects AC voltage without direct contact.
5.4 Data Logging and Analysis
The UT181A can log up to 20,000 data points. Connect the multimeter to a PC via USB or Bluetooth (with optional adapter) to transfer and analyze logged data using the provided software. The software allows for trend capture and data comparison.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the multimeter's casing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the display clean and free from scratches.
6.2 Battery Care
To prolong battery life, charge the Li-ion battery regularly and avoid fully discharging it. If storing the multimeter for an extended period, ensure the battery is partially charged.
6.3 Fuse Replacement
If the multimeter fails to measure current or shows incorrect readings in current modes, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the specifications for the correct fuse type (e.g., F10A H 1000V, F0.8A H 1000V). Always disconnect test leads and power before opening the fuse compartment.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Communication Issues
If the multimeter fails to establish communication with a PC or mobile device via USB or Bluetooth, ensure the communication settings are correctly configured in the multimeter's setup menu. Some firmware versions may require re-enabling communication after each power cycle. Verify that the correct drivers are installed on your PC.
7.2 Inaccurate Readings
Check the battery level, ensure test leads are properly connected, and verify that the correct measurement function and range are selected. For current measurements, inspect the fuses. If issues persist, consult the detailed troubleshooting section in the full user manual or contact UNI-T support.
