DSD TECH SH-C30G Isolated USB to CAN Adapter Instruction Manual

Model: SH-C30G

1. Introduction

The DSD TECH SH-C30G is an isolated USB to CAN adapter, designed as an upgrade from the SH-C30A model. It features a built-in isolated power supply and signal isolation chip, which effectively protects your computer and minimizes electrical noise interference, making it suitable for industrial applications. This device is based on the open-source hardware project Canable 1.0 Pro, with all documentation (schematics, BOM lists, Gerb files) publicly available on the DSD TECH website.

The adapter provides essential interfaces including CAN-H, CAN-L, and Ground pins. It also incorporates a built-in 120 ohm switch and a programming switch, a design feature pioneered by DSD TECH on USB CAN adapters.

  • USB Type B: Connects the adapter to your computer.
  • CAN-H, CAN-L, GND, 5V0: Terminal block for connecting to the CAN bus.
  • R120 Switch: Toggles the built-in 120 ohm termination resistor. Ensure this is set correctly for your CAN network.
  • Boot Switch: Used to switch between Work Mode and DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) Mode.

2.2 Connecting to Your Computer

Connect the USB Type B cable to the adapter and then to an available USB port on your computer. The device is compatible with Windows 10, 8, 7, Linux, and Mac OS.

2.3 Work Mode vs. DFU Mode

The Boot Switch determines the adapter's operating mode:

  • Work Mode (Boot Switch OFF): The adapter operates with its default Candlelight firmware, allowing direct use with compatible software like Cangaroo.
  • DFU Mode (Boot Switch ON): This mode is used for flashing different firmware versions to meet specific application needs. Supported firmware can be found on the canable.io and DSD TECH websites.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Basic CAN Bus Connection

Connect the SH-C30G adapter to your CAN bus using the CAN-H, CAN-L, and GND terminals. Ensure proper polarity and termination for your network.

3.3 Firmware Updates

To update the firmware, place the Boot Switch in the ON position (DFU Mode) before connecting the adapter to your computer. Then, visit the CANable updater website and follow the on-screen instructions to flash the desired firmware.

4. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your DSD TECH SH-C30G adapter, follow these general maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the device clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing the adapter to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Do not attempt to open the casing or modify the internal components, as this will void the warranty.
  • Store the adapter in a safe place when not in use to prevent physical damage.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Device Not Recognized

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the adapter and your computer.
  • Try a different USB port on your computer.
  • Verify that the Boot Switch is in the correct position (OFF for Work Mode, ON for DFU Mode if attempting firmware update).
  • Check your computer's Device Manager (Windows) or `lsusb` command (Linux) to see if the device is detected.

5.2 No CAN Communication

  • Confirm that the CAN-H, CAN-L, and GND connections to your CAN bus are correct and secure.
  • Check the R120 switch setting. The 120 ohm termination resistor should be enabled (ON) if the adapter is at either end of the CAN bus, or disabled (OFF) if it's in the middle of a bus with existing termination.
  • Ensure your CAN software (e.g., Cangaroo, BUSMASTER) is configured with the correct CAN baud rate and interface.
  • Verify that other devices on the CAN bus are powered on and functioning correctly.

5.3 Firmware Update Issues

  • Make sure the Boot Switch is in the ON position (DFU Mode) before connecting for firmware updates.
  • Use the official CANable updater website for flashing firmware.
  • If using Linux, you may need to add a udev rule or run Chrome as root for the web updater to detect the device.
