New V5 Universal Ebike Torque Arm - Instruction Manual

Model: TorqArm_V5 | Brand: Grin Technologies

Product Overview

The Grin Technologies V5 Universal Ebike Torque Arm is designed to secure hub motors to bicycle frames, preventing axle spinout. It is compatible with both front and rear mounted motors and works on either the left or right side as needed. This torque arm is specifically designed for frames or forks that have threaded M5 eyelets available for anchoring.

Key Features

  • Works for front and rear mounted motors, both on left and right side as needed.
  • Made from 3mm stainless steel, the arm is strong and is firmly held in place by the arm to a threaded M5 eyelet on the frame/fork.
  • Flexible splined insert concept that allows 50 angles of orientation so you can easily position the arm parallel to a frame/fork component.
  • Splined-inserts are included for 12, 14 and 16mm axles.
  • Splined inserts made from hardened 17-4 for up to double the spinout strength compared to most regular stainless steels.
  • Use this Torque Arm when threaded eyelets are available on the frame to anchor the arm on. If eyelets are not available, we recommend our TorqArm V6.
  • All torque arm parts proudly made in Canada.

What's Included

The V5 Universal Ebike Torque Arm kit includes all necessary components for installation:

  • M5 Hardware (various lengths: 12mm, 16mm, 20mm bolts, nuts, and washers)
  • Hardened Metal Axle Inserts (for 12mm, 14mm, and 16mm axles)
  • Torque Arm
  • Torque Plate
  • C-Washer

Installation Guide

Follow these steps for proper installation of your V5 Universal Ebike Torque Arm. Ensure you have a mallet or hammer, a wrench (size depends on your axle nut), an 8mm wrench, and a 4mm Allen key.

Important Considerations

Figure 3: Illustration of potential failures (axle spinout, steel spread, aluminum breaks) when not using a properly engineered torque arm.

For single-side installations, avoid installing torque arms on hollow axles as they are weaker. Always use a Grin tested and engineered torque arm to prevent axle spinout and frame damage.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Determine Orientation:

Start by placing the 'C-Washer' onto the axle to clear any lawyer lips on the motor. Then, place the appropriate axle insert (e.g., M12) onto the axle. Loosely mount the torque arm to the eyelet using one of its two end holes. Dry fit the torque plate and arm to determine the appropriate angle for alignment. The design is versatile, offering multiple mounting options. Find the configuration that best aligns the holes for the M5 hardware. You can also flip the linkage arm to change hole alignment. By rotating the insert 180 degrees (A vs B), you can offset the angle of orientation by 7 degrees for fine-tuning.

  2. Set Insert into Arm:

Once you have confirmed the installation orientation, remove the arm from the motor. Pound the chosen insert into the torque plate using a mallet or hammer on a hard surface. A vice can also be used to press the insert firmly into place. The snug fit ensures these parts stay together in the correct orientation.

  3. Final Installation:

Reinstall the assembled torque arm onto the motor axle, ensuring the 'C-Washer' is in place to clear lawyer lips. Install your hardware and axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 60Nm of torque. The M5 hardware (bolts connecting the arm to the eyelet) should be tightened to 6Nm. Once tightened, your motor should be secure from axle spinout, providing a safe and sturdy ride.
