  • Operation Precaution: Do not touch the filter during operation. Always unplug the filter from the power outlet before performing any maintenance or handling.
  • Water Level: Never operate the filter without water (dry-run). Ensure the filter is fully submerged in water up to the recommended level before plugging it in.
  • Installation: Ensure the filter is securely mounted on the aquarium rim according to the instructions.

2. Product Overview

The SOBO Aquarium Hang On Back Filter WP-618H is an external power filter designed for small aquariums up to 30 cm in length. It provides efficient mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration to maintain clear and healthy aquarium water.

Figure 1: SOBO Aquarium Hang On Back Filter WP-618H. This image shows the compact design of the filter, typically featuring an intake tube, filter media compartment, and an outflow spout that hangs over the back of the aquarium.

Key Components:

  • Motor Unit: Powers the water flow through the filter.
  • Filter Media Compartment: Holds various filter media (e.g., sponge, activated carbon) for multi-stage filtration.
  • Intake Tube: Draws water from the aquarium into the filter.
  • Outflow Spout: Returns filtered water to the aquarium.
  • Adjustable Hanger: Secures the filter to the aquarium rim.

3. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to properly install and set up your SOBO Aquarium Hang On Back Filter WP-618H:

  1. Unpack and Inspect: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage. If any parts are damaged, do not proceed with installation and contact customer support.
  2. Assemble Intake Tube: Attach the intake tube securely to the bottom of the filter motor unit. Ensure all connections are snug.
  3. Install Filter Media: Open the filter media compartment. Insert the provided filter media (e.g., sponge, carbon cartridge) into the designated slots. Refer to the media packaging for correct orientation if applicable.
  4. Mount on Aquarium: Hang the filter securely on the back rim of your aquarium. Adjust the hanger to ensure the filter is level and stable. The intake tube should extend into the aquarium water.
  5. Prime the Filter: This is a critical step. Before plugging in the filter, fill the filter body with aquarium water until it is full. This ensures the impeller is submerged and prevents dry-running.
  6. Check Water Level: Ensure the water level in your fish tank is above the inlet of the filter's intake tube. The filter cannot operate effectively if the water level is too low.
  7. Connect Power: Once the filter is primed and the water level is adequate, plug the filter into a suitable power outlet (AC 220-240V, 50/60Hz). The filter should start operating immediately.

Important: Never plug in the filter before it is filled with water. Dry-running can cause permanent damage to the motor.

4. Operating Instructions

Once properly set up, the SOBO WP-618H filter will continuously circulate and filter your aquarium water. Observe the water flow from the outflow spout to ensure proper operation.

  • Continuous Operation: For optimal water quality, the filter should run continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Water Flow: The filter has a flow rate of 280 L/H. Ensure there are no obstructions to the intake or outflow.
  • Noise Level: A properly operating filter should run quietly. Excessive noise may indicate an issue with the impeller or air trapped in the system.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of your filter and the health of your aquarium. Always unplug the filter before performing any maintenance.

  1. Filter Media Replacement/Cleaning:
    • Sponge/Mechanical Media: Rinse the filter sponge in old aquarium water (removed during a water change) every 1-2 weeks to remove trapped debris. Do not use tap water as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria.
    • Activated Carbon/Chemical Media: Replace activated carbon cartridges every 2-4 weeks, as carbon becomes saturated and ineffective over time.
    • Biological Media: Biological media (if present) should only be gently rinsed in old aquarium water if heavily clogged, to preserve beneficial bacteria.
  2. Impeller Cleaning: Every 1-2 months, or if you notice reduced flow or increased noise, remove the motor unit cover and carefully extract the impeller. Clean the impeller and its housing with a small brush to remove any debris or mineral buildup.
  3. Intake Tube Cleaning: Periodically clean the intake tube and strainer to ensure unrestricted water flow.
  4. Housing Cleaning: Wipe down the exterior of the filter housing with a damp cloth.

Caution: Never use soaps or detergents to clean any part of the filter, as residues can be harmful to fish.
