2. Safety Information

It is crucial to read and understand all warnings and cautions on the extinguisher label and in this manual. Improper use can lead to serious bodily injury or property damage.

  • The dry chemical agent is non-toxic and will not damage appliances, but it may cause skin irritation.
  • Always place fire extinguishers within easy reach and on every level of your home, especially where fires are more likely to start (e.g., kitchen, garage).
  • This product must be removed from service 12 years after its date of manufacture. The year of manufacture is located on the bottom of the cylinder.
  • Do not test the extinguisher. Any discharge will result in pressure loss, rendering it ineffective.
  • Do not use the extinguisher if it has been dropped, damaged, dented, or corroded. Replace immediately.
  • Avoid exposure to the contents if wearing contact lenses or if you have respiratory illnesses or skin allergies.
  • In case of contact with the agent, flush the affected area with clean, cool water.
  • Do not store at high temperatures above 120°F (49°C) or at extremely cold temperatures below -40°F (-40°C).

3. Setup and Installation

The Kidde Fire Extinguisher 711A comes with a UL-approved plastic wall hanger for convenient mounting and storage. Choose an easily accessible location, such as near your kitchen stove, but not directly above it, to ensure quick access in an emergency.

  • Mounting: Use the included wall mount bracket to secure the extinguisher to a wall. Ensure it is mounted at an appropriate height for all adult users to reach easily.
  • Placement: For optimal safety, place a fire extinguisher on every level of your home and in areas with higher fire risk, such as the kitchen, garage, and laundry room.

4. Operating Instructions (PASS Method)

The Kidde Fire Extinguisher 711A is designed for simple and reliable operation using the PASS firefighting method:

  1. P - Pull the Pin: Hold the extinguisher upright. Pull the safety pin to break the tamper seal.
  2. A - Aim at Base of Fire: Stand back approximately 6 feet (1.83 meters) from the fire. Aim the nozzle at the base of the flames.
  3. S - Squeeze the Lever: Squeeze the operating lever to discharge the extinguishing agent.
  4. S - Sweep Side to Side: While squeezing the lever, sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until the flames are extinguished.

Immediately turn off the appliance or remove the heat source once the fire is out. The discharge time is approximately 8-10 seconds.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance checks ensure your fire extinguisher is ready for use when needed.

  • Pressure Indicator: Check the easy-to-read pressure indicator regularly. The arrow should always be in the green area, indicating it is fully charged. If the arrow is in the red ('EMPTY' or 'DISCARD/REPLACE') area, the extinguisher needs to be replaced.
  • Physical Condition: Inspect the extinguisher for any signs of damage, dents, corrosion, or blockages in the nozzle. Ensure the safety pin is intact.
  • Manufacture Date: Locate the year of manufacture stamped on the bottom of the cylinder. Replace the extinguisher if it is over 12 years old, regardless of the pressure gauge reading.

6. Troubleshooting

  • No Discharge / Low Pressure: If the pressure indicator is not in the green zone, or if the extinguisher fails to discharge, it is likely depressurized or faulty. Action: Do not attempt to repair. Dispose of and replace the unit immediately.
  • Physical Damage: If the extinguisher shows any signs of physical damage (dents, corrosion, broken parts), its integrity may be compromised. Action: Do not use. Dispose of and replace the unit immediately.
  • Expired Unit: If the manufacture date on the bottom of the cylinder indicates it is older than 12 years. Action: Dispose of and replace the unit, even if the pressure gauge appears to be in the green.
