Component Identification:

  • LED Display: Shows decoded Morse code characters and Words Per Minute (WPM).
  • DC Barrel Power Connector: Labeled for 9V input, accepts DC 7-12V, 500mA.
  • USB-C Connector: For 5V power input, typically used with a 3.7V lithium battery.
  • KEY Audio Connector: 3.5mm jack for connecting a Morse code keyer.
  • CW Audio Connectors (x2): Two parallel 3.5mm jacks. One serves as Morse code audio tone input (frequency range 250-740 Hz, level 0.1-5V), and the other can be used for monitoring the Morse signal via a speaker or headphones.
  • Potentiometer RP1: Adjusts the contrast of the LED display.
  • Potentiometer RP2: Used for synchronizing the decoder with the incoming Morse code frequency. LED3 illuminates when properly adjusted.
  • WPM Button: Displays the received Words Per Minute (WPM) speed.
  • Red Switch SW2: Has two positions. When pressed, spaces between words on the LCD display are omitted.
  • USB/BAT Power Switch: Positioned to the right for external power (USB or DC barrel) and to the left for battery power.
  • LED3: Indicator for Morse code frequency synchronization (lights up when RP2 is correctly adjusted).
  • Charging LEDs: Red LED indicates charging, Blue LED indicates fully charged (when a lithium battery is connected).

5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your ciciglow CW Decoder:

  1. Power Connection:
    • For external power, connect a DC 7-12V, 500mA power adapter to the DC barrel jack. Ensure the USB/BAT switch is in the 'USB' (right) position.
    • Alternatively, connect a Type-C 5V power source to the USB-C port. If using a 3.7V lithium battery (not included), ensure it is properly connected to the designated battery connector and the USB/BAT switch is in the 'BAT' (left) position.
  2. Initial Power-Up: Once power is connected, the device should power on, and the LED display will activate.
  3. Display Contrast Adjustment: Turn Potentiometer RP1 to adjust the contrast of the LED display for optimal readability.

6. Operating Instructions

The CW Decoder can be used for both sending practice and decoding incoming Morse code signals.

6.1. Morse Code Keyer Function (Sending Practice)

  1. Connect your Morse code keyer (straight key or paddle) to the KEY 3.5mm audio jack.
  2. As you operate your key, the decoded characters will appear on the LED display.
  3. Press the WPM button to view the current Words Per Minute speed of your keying.
  4. Toggle the Red Switch SW2 to enable or disable spaces between words on the display, depending on your preference for practice.

6.2. Decoding Incoming Morse Code Signals

  1. Connect the audio output from your radio receiver (e.g., headphone jack or line out) to one of the CW 3.5mm audio input jacks. Ensure the audio signal is within the specified range of 0.1-5V and the Morse code tone frequency is between 250-740 Hz.
  2. If desired, connect headphones or a speaker to the other CW 3.5mm jack to monitor the incoming Morse signal.
  3. Adjust Potentiometer RP2 to synchronize the decoder with the incoming Morse code frequency. The LED3 indicator will light up when proper synchronization is achieved.
  4. The decoded Morse code characters will be displayed on the LED screen.
  5. Press the WPM button to view the detected Words Per Minute speed of the incoming signal.
  6. Toggle the Red Switch SW2 to control the display of spaces between words.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your CW Decoder:

  • Keep the device clean and dry. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior.
  • Avoid exposing the device to dust, dirt, or corrosive substances.
  • Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your CW Decoder, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No display or dim displayIncorrect power connection; Display contrast too low.Check power supply and ensure it meets specifications. Adjust Potentiometer RP1 for display contrast.
Device not decoding Morse codeIncorrect audio input level; Incorrect frequency synchronization (RP2); Morse code tone frequency out of range.Ensure audio input level is between 0.1-5V. Adjust Potentiometer RP2 until LED3 illuminates. Verify incoming Morse code tone frequency is between 250-740 Hz.
Inaccurate decodingNoisy input signal; Improper RP2 adjustment; Morse code dot width outside acceptable range.Ensure a clean audio signal. Fine-tune Potentiometer RP2. The acceptable dot width is 100-160 ms.
Device gets hotSimultaneous use of battery and external 9V power.Avoid powering the device with both a battery and an external 9V source at the same time. Use only one power source.
