5. Assembly Instructions
The SUNPOW OTMD09 Metal Detector features an improved telescopic cam lock design for quick assembly.
- Attach the Search Coil: Connect the 10-inch search coil to the lower stem using the provided bolt and nut. Ensure it is securely fastened but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Stems: Slide the lower stem into the upper stem.
- Attach the Control Box: Mount the control box onto the upper stem. Secure it in place.
- Adjust the Armrest and Handle: Position the armrest for comfortable use. The handle is also adjustable for optimal grip.
- Secure the Cable: Wrap the search coil cable around the stem, ensuring it is not taut and does not interfere with adjustments. Plug the cable into the control box.
- Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the control box and insert the two AA rechargeable batteries, observing polarity.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Power On/Off
Press the POWER button to turn the detector on or off. The LCD screen will illuminate.
6.2 Understanding the Display
The large LCD screen provides intuitive data display, including:
- Target ID: A numerical value (0-99) indicating the probable type of metal detected.
- Depth Indicator: Estimates the depth of the detected object.
- Battery Level: Shows the remaining battery power.
- Mode Indicator: Displays the currently selected detection mode.
- Sensitivity Level: Indicates the current sensitivity setting.
- Volume Level: Shows the audio volume setting.

Image 6.1: The enhanced user interface features a 1.5 times larger LCD screen with backlight, abundant indicators, and easy-to-use silicone buttons for POWER, MODE, PP (Pinpoint), SENS (Sensitivity), and VOI LIGHT (Volume/Backlight).

Image 6.2: This image illustrates the Numerical Target ID feature, showing how different metal types (e.g., Iron, Nickel, Pull Tab, Zinc, Copper, Silver) correspond to specific numerical ranges on the display, aiding in target identification.
6.3 Detection Modes
The detector offers 5 distinct detection modes, selectable by pressing the MODE button:
- ALL METAL Mode: Detects all types of metal. This mode is ideal for general searching when you want to find any metallic object.
- DISC (Discrimination) Mode: Allows you to eliminate unwanted metal targets in sequence. This helps filter out junk metals like iron.
- JEWELRY Mode: Optimized for finding jewelry. This mode typically discriminates against iron and other common trash metals.
- MEMORY Mode: Stores your preferred settings, allowing you to recall them without reconfiguring the detector each time you power it on.
- PINPOINT (PP) Mode: Used to precisely locate the detected target. Once a target is found in another mode, switch to PP mode to narrow down its exact location.

Image 6.3: A visual representation of the five detection modes: ALL METAL (signals all metals), CUSTOM (eliminates undesirable metallic targets), JEWELRY (focused on jewelry), MEMORY (explores only memorized metals), and PP (Pinpoint, for precise localization).
6.4 Sensitivity Adjustment
Press the SENS button and use the + or - buttons to adjust the detector's sensitivity. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase false signals in mineralized ground or areas with electromagnetic interference. Lower sensitivity reduces false signals but may decrease detection depth.
6.5 Volume and Backlight Adjustment
Press the VOI LIGHT button to adjust the volume or activate/deactivate the backlight. Use the + or - buttons to change the volume level. A long press on the VOI LIGHT button typically toggles the backlight.
6.6 Ground Balance
The detector features an advanced chip with automatic ground balance for strong anti-interference performance. This system automatically protects against interference, ensuring more precise identification even in challenging environments.

Image 6.4: A user operating the metal detector in an outdoor setting, demonstrating the effectiveness of the enhanced chip with automatic ground balance for strong anti-interference capabilities and greater precision.
6.7 Detection Depth
The 10-inch waterproof search coil allows for a detection depth of up to 11 inches (approximately 28 cm). This enables effective searching in various terrains, including beaches and shallow water.

Image 6.5: An illustration depicting the metal detector's search coil detecting objects underground, highlighting its 25.4 cm (10-inch) search coil and detection depth capability of up to 11 inches.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the control box clean and dry.
- Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place when not in use. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries from the control box to prevent leakage.
- Battery Care: Use only the recommended rechargeable batteries. Recharge them regularly to maintain their lifespan.
- Cable Inspection: Periodically check the search coil cable for any signs of wear or damage.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Dead or incorrectly inserted batteries | Check battery polarity; replace or recharge batteries. |
| Constant false signals / Chatter | High sensitivity; electromagnetic interference; mineralized ground | Reduce sensitivity; move away from power lines/electronics; perform ground balance. |
| Detector beeps but no target found | Small, deep target; target moved; ground conditions | Use PINPOINT mode; sweep slower; re-evaluate ground conditions. |
| Poor detection depth | Low sensitivity; heavily mineralized ground; small target | Increase sensitivity (if conditions allow); ensure proper ground balance; sweep slowly. |
