Binardat Switch Port Layout and Indicators

Figure 3.1: Front and Rear Panel Overview

This detailed image shows the front and rear panels of the switch. The front panel includes eight 2.5Gbps RJ45 ports (labeled 1-8), a Power Indicator LED, a DIP Switch for VLAN/Default mode, and one 10Gbps SFP+ Port (labeled 9). The rear panel features a Grounding Hole and a DC Input Port for the external power adapter.

Front Panel:

  • RJ45 Ports (1-8): Eight 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports for connecting network devices.
  • Link/ACT LEDs (for RJ45 ports):
    • Orange (Left): Indicates 100Mbps or 1000Mbps connection.
    • Green (Right): Indicates 2.5Gbps connection.
  • Power Indicator LED: Green when the device is powered on.
  • DIP Switch: Toggles between Default mode (left) and VLAN mode (right).
  • SFP+ Port (9): One 10 Gigabit SFP+ port for high-speed fiber optic connections.
    • Orange (Left): Indicates 1000Mbps connection.
    • Green (Right): Indicates 10Gbps connection.

Rear Panel:

  • Grounding Hole: For connecting a grounding wire (recommended for surge protection).
  • DC Input Port: Connects to the external 12V/2.0A power adapter.

4. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Binardat switch:

  1. Unpack the Switch: Carefully remove the switch and its accessories from the packaging.
  2. Placement: Place the switch on a stable, flat surface (desktop) or mount it on a wall using appropriate hardware (not included). Ensure adequate ventilation around the device.
  3. Connect Power: Connect the provided power adapter to the DC Input Port on the rear of the switch, then plug the adapter into a power outlet. The Power Indicator LED on the front panel should illuminate green.
  4. Connect Network Devices:
    • Connect your network devices (e.g., computers, NAS, gaming consoles, routers, WiFi 6 APs) to the RJ45 ports (1-8) using standard Ethernet cables (Cat5e or better for 2.5G speeds).
    • For 10G connectivity, insert a compatible SFP+ module (not included) into the SFP+ Port (9), then connect a fiber optic cable to the module.
  5. Verify Connection: Check the Link/ACT LEDs for each connected port. A solid green or orange light indicates a successful link. A blinking light indicates data activity.

DIP Switch and Port-based VLAN:

The DIP switch on the front panel allows you to select between two operating modes:

  • Default Mode (Switch to Left): In this mode, all ports (1-9) can communicate with each other. This is the standard operating mode for a typical unmanaged switch.
  • VLAN Mode (Switch to Right): When VLAN mode is enabled, ports 1 through 8 are isolated from each other. This means devices connected to ports 1-8 cannot communicate directly with each other. However, all ports (1-8) can still communicate with Port 9 (the SFP+ port). This feature enhances network security by segmenting traffic, for example, allowing surveillance cameras on ports 1-8 to send data to a central NVR connected to port 9 without interfering with other network traffic.
Binardat Switch Port-based VLAN Explanation

Figure 5.1: Port-based VLAN Functionality

This image visually explains the Port-based VLAN feature. When enabled, devices connected to ports 1-8 (e.g., security cameras) are isolated from each other but can communicate with port 9 (SFP+). This is demonstrated with VLANs 1-8 connecting to a central point (Port 9), and an example of a security camera feed being isolated and then processed.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Binardat switch, consider the following maintenance tips:

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the exterior of the switch with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners or aerosols, which can damage the device.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation holes on the sides of the switch are not obstructed. Proper airflow is crucial for heat dissipation, especially given its fanless design.
  • Cable Management: Keep network cables neatly organized to prevent strain on ports and improve airflow.
  • Power Supply: Use only the original power adapter provided with the switch.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the switch within its specified temperature and humidity ranges to prevent damage. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near heat sources.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Binardat switch, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Power Indicator LightNo power supply or faulty power adapter.
  • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to the switch and a working power outlet.
  • Try a different power outlet.
  • Verify the power adapter is the correct one provided with the switch.
No Link/ACT Light on a PortNo connection, faulty cable, or device issue.
  • Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into both the switch port and the connected device.
  • Try a different Ethernet cable.
  • Verify the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • Check if the cable length exceeds the maximum recommended length (e.g., 100 meters for Cat5e/6).
Slow Connection SpeedCable quality, device capability, or network congestion.
  • Ensure you are using Cat5e or better Ethernet cables for 2.5G speeds.
  • Verify that your connected devices (e.g., network card, router) support 2.5G or 10G speeds.
  • Check for excessive network traffic or bandwidth-intensive applications.
  • Ensure the Link/ACT LED indicates the expected speed (Green for 2.5G/10G, Orange for 1G/100M).
VLAN Mode Not Working as ExpectedDIP switch setting or misunderstanding of VLAN function.
  • Ensure the DIP switch is set to the "VLAN" position (right).
  • Remember that in VLAN mode, ports 1-8 are isolated from each other but can communicate with port 9 (SFP+).
  • If you need all ports to communicate freely, set the DIP switch to "Default" (left).
