5. Setup

  • Always connect the black test lead to the COM (Common) terminal.
  • For voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, duty cycle, and diode measurements, connect the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  • For current measurements up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the mA terminal.
  • For current measurements up to 20A, connect the red test lead to the 20A terminal.

Note: Remove the protective caps from the test leads before use.

6. Operating Instructions

This section details how to perform various measurements and utilize the special functions of the OWON OW18E multimeter.

6.1 Basic Measurements

6.1.1 Voltage Measurement (DC/AC)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the V (Voltage) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  3. Press the SELECT button to toggle between DC and AC voltage measurement if necessary.
  4. Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component under test.
  5. Read the voltage value on the LCD display.

6.1.2 Current Measurement (DC/AC)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the mA or 20A position, depending on the expected current.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal. Connect the red test lead to the mA terminal for low current or the 20A terminal for high current.
  3. Press the SELECT button to toggle between DC and AC current measurement if necessary.
  4. CAUTION: Connect the meter in series with the circuit. Do not connect in parallel across a voltage source.
  5. Read the current value on the LCD display.

6.1.3 Resistance Measurement

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  3. Ensure the circuit or component under test is de-energized before measuring resistance.
  4. Connect the test probes across the component.
  5. Read the resistance value on the LCD display.

6.1.4 Continuity Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position. Press SELECT until the continuity symbol ()))) appears.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  3. Connect the test probes across the circuit or component.
  4. If continuity exists (resistance below a certain threshold), the meter will emit an audible beep.

6.1.5 Diode Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position. Press SELECT until the diode symbol (→|) appears.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  3. Connect the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode of the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop.
  4. Reverse the probes. The display should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.

6.1.6 Capacitance Measurement

  1. Set the rotary switch to the F (Capacitance) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  3. Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before measurement.
  4. Connect the test probes across the capacitor.
  5. Read the capacitance value on the LCD display.

6.1.7 Frequency (Hz) and Duty Cycle (%) Measurement

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Hz% position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal.
  3. Press the SELECT button to toggle between Frequency and Duty Cycle.
  4. Connect the test probes in parallel to the signal source.
  5. Read the frequency or duty cycle value on the LCD display.

6.1.8 Temperature Measurement

  1. Set the rotary switch to the °C/°F (Temperature) position.
  2. Connect the temperature probe (if included) to the VΩHz and COM terminals, observing polarity.
  3. Press the SELECT button to toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
  4. Place the tip of the temperature probe on or near the object whose temperature is to be measured.
  5. Read the temperature value on the LCD display.

6.2 Special Functions

6.2.1 Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection

The NCV function allows for detection of AC voltage without direct contact with conductors.

  1. Set the rotary switch to the NCV position.
  2. Move the NCV sensor (located at the top of the meter) close to the conductor or outlet.
  3. The meter will emit an audible beep and the LED indicator will flash, with the frequency increasing as the voltage strength increases.

6.2.2 Bluetooth Data Logging and Offline Recording

The OW18E can connect to a mobile device via Bluetooth to log measurement data and perform offline recording.

  1. Ensure the multimeter is ON and Bluetooth is enabled on your mobile device.
  2. Open the OWON multimeter application on your device.

  1. Select the desired measurement function (e.g., Voltage, Current).
  2. Press the MIN/MAX button. The meter will start recording.
