6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the optimal performance and lifespan of your Doulton UltraCarb filter element.
6.1. Cleaning the Ceramic Filter Candle
Ceramic filter candles are re-cleanable. We recommend a gentle, evenly-applied buffing with a scouring pad until the whiteness of the ceramic returns. Rubber gloves are recommended during cleaning. NEVER use soap or detergents, as these can contaminate the filter. Ensure that the end of the plastic mount does not come into contact with unfiltered water during the cleaning process.

6.2. Filter Replacement
The lifespan of the filter element depends on water quality and usage. Replace the filter when the flow rate significantly diminishes and cleaning no longer restores it, or according to your system's recommended schedule.
6.3. Recycling Old Ceramic Filters
You can recycle the plastic mount of the old filter element. The old filter element itself can be composted or used to help with drainage in the bottom of plant pots. To separate, gently remove the mount using light pressure with a hammer to break it from the filter element. Next, cover the ceramic with an old rag and gently break it into small pieces, again using light pressure with a hammer, for disposal or use in gardening.

7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common questions and issues you might encounter.
7.1. Reduced Water Flow
If you experience a significant reduction in water flow, the filter element may be clogged with impurities. Refer to Section 6.1 for cleaning instructions. If cleaning does not restore flow, the filter may have reached the end of its effective life and requires replacement.
7.2. Water Taste or Odor Issues
If filtered water develops an unusual taste or odor, ensure the filter was installed correctly and flushed thoroughly. If the issue persists, the filter may be exhausted and require replacement.
7.3. Are all ceramic water filters the same?
No. Doulton Water Filters are original ceramic filter manufacturers and a globally-trusted brand. Doulton has been updating its filtration design since 1826. Doulton is a UK ISO accredited company, offering independently and regularly-tested water filters. Certifications include NSF, WRAS, Lucideon, and many more.
