VIHELM MD3005

VIHELM MD3005 Underground Metal Detector

User Manual

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the VIHELM MD3005 Underground Metal Detector. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, assembly, and maintenance of your device. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the metal detector to ensure optimal performance and to prevent damage.

2. Safety Information

  • Always be aware of your surroundings when operating the metal detector.
  • Avoid using the detector near active power lines, underground cables, or pipes.
  • Do not operate the detector in hazardous or explosive environments.
  • Respect private property and obtain permission before detecting on private land.
  • Dispose of batteries responsibly according to local regulations.
  • Keep the control box dry. The search coil is water-resistant (IP65 rated), but the control box is not designed for submersion.

3. Package Contents

Upon opening the package, please verify that all components are present and in good condition:

  • VIHELM MD3005 Metal Detector (Control Box, Adjustable Stem, Search Coil)
  • User Manual (this document)

If any items are missing or damaged, please contact your retailer or VIHELM customer support.

Figure 1: VIHELM MD3005 Metal Detector (assembled)

This image shows the complete VIHELM MD3005 metal detector, featuring the search coil, adjustable stem, and control box with handle.

The detector consists of three primary parts:

  • Search Coil: The circular component at the bottom, responsible for detecting metal objects. It has an IP65 rating for protection against dust and low-pressure water jets.
  • Adjustable Stem: Connects the search coil to the control box, allowing for length adjustment to suit user height.
  • Control Box: Contains the electronics, controls, and display for operating the detector. It also includes the handle for comfortable use.

Figure 2: Control Panel Details

This image provides a close-up view of the control panel, highlighting the Sensitivity, Volume, and Discrimination dials, as well as the Battery Test meter.

The control panel features the following:

  • SENSITIVITY Dial: Adjusts the detector's sensitivity to targets.
  • VOLUME Dial: Controls the audio output level.
  • DISCRIMINATION Dial: Allows the user to differentiate between different types of metals.
  • BATT TEST Meter: Displays the current battery level.

5. Setup

5.1 Assembly

  1. Carefully unpack all components from the packaging.
  2. Attach the search coil to the lower end of the adjustable stem. Ensure it is securely fastened.
  3. Connect the upper end of the adjustable stem to the control box. Tighten any locking mechanisms to prevent wobbling.
  4. Adjust the length of the push rod (stem) to a comfortable height for operation. The push rod can be extended to suit various user heights.

5.2 Battery Installation

The MD3005 is battery-powered. Proper battery installation is crucial for operation.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the control box.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert the required batteries (e.g., 9V or AA, check the compartment for specific type) according to the polarity indicators (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Powering On/Off

Locate the power switch on the control box. Slide or press the switch to turn the detector ON. Repeat to turn OFF when not in use.

6.2 Basic Detection

Hold the detector with the search coil parallel to the ground, about 1-2 inches above the surface. Sweep the search coil slowly from side to side in overlapping motions. When a metal object is detected, the detector will emit an audible signal.

6.3 Sensitivity Adjustment

Use the SENSITIVITY dial to adjust the detector's detection depth and stability. Turn the dial clockwise to increase sensitivity for deeper targets, or counter-clockwise to decrease sensitivity in areas with high electrical interference or ground mineralization.

6.4 Volume Control

The VOLUME dial allows you to adjust the loudness of the audio alerts. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease.

6.5 Discrimination

The DISCRIMINATION dial enables the detector to distinguish between different types of metal objects, specifically between ferrous (iron) and non-ferrous metals. Adjust this dial to filter out unwanted junk metals and focus on more valuable targets. Higher discrimination settings will ignore more types of metal.

6.6 Detection Frequency Adjustment

The detector features detection frequency adjustment. This function helps optimize performance in varying ground conditions and can reduce interference from other electronic devices or nearby metal detectors.

6.7 Battery Testing

To check the battery status, observe the BATT TEST meter on the control panel. The needle will indicate the current battery level. Replace batteries when the needle falls into the low range to ensure consistent performance.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

  • After each use, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.
  • Clean the control box with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Ensure the search coil is clean before storing, especially if it has been exposed to saltwater.

7.2 Storage

  • Store the metal detector in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage to the control box.

8. Troubleshooting
