4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the top rear of the device.
  2. Slide the cover open.
  3. Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Initial Power On

Press the power button (usually the central button or indicated by a power symbol) to turn on the device. The LCD screen will light up, and the device will perform a brief self-check.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Automatic Material Recognition

The GT235 automatically recognizes the substrate material (ferrous or non-ferrous) when placed on a surface.

Figure 5.1: Automatic Substrate Recognition

Simply place the measurement probe firmly and perpendicularly onto the coated surface. The meter will detect whether the substrate is magnetic (Fe) or non-magnetic (nFe) and display the corresponding icon.

5.2 Measurement Modes

The GT235 offers three distinct measurement modes to suit various applications:

Illustration of the three measuring modes: SNG for Single measuring, CTN for Continuous measuring, and DIF for Difference measuring.

Figure 5.2: Measurement Modes

  • SNG (Single Measurement): For taking individual readings at specific points. Press the probe onto the surface, read the value, then lift the probe.
  • CTN (Continuous Measurement): For scanning a surface and getting real-time readings. Keep the probe in contact with the surface and slide it smoothly. The display will update continuously.
  • DIF (Differential Measurement): Measures the difference between a current reading and a previously set reference value. Useful for quality control or comparing thicknesses.

To switch between modes, press the MODE button.

5.3 Unit Switching

The meter can display measurements in micrometers (µm), mils (mil), or millimeters (mm).

Figure 6.1: Calibration Models

  • Zero Calibration: Used to set the zero point on an uncoated substrate.
  • Offset Calibration: Adjusts the meter's reading to match a known thickness.
  • Basic Calibration: A more comprehensive calibration using multiple known thickness foils.

Detailed steps for each calibration method are provided in the comprehensive instruction manual that came with your device. Always use the included calibration foils for accurate calibration.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and accuracy of your GT235 meter.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the meter in its nylon storage bag in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
  • Probe Care: Keep the measurement probe clean and free of debris. Avoid scratching or damaging the probe surface.
  • Auto Power-Off: The device has an auto power-off function to conserve battery power.
