DEWALT 20V MAX 8-Inch Pruning Chainsaw (DCCS623B) Instruction Manual

Model: DCCS623B

1. Introduction and Overview

The DEWALT 20V MAX 8-inch Pruning Chainsaw (DCCS623B) is a lightweight and compact tool designed for efficient cutting, trimming, and pruning. Its high-efficiency brushless motor is engineered to maximize runtime and motor life, offering up to 70 cuts per charge on 4" x 4" pressure-treated pine when using a DCB230 battery (sold separately). Weighing just 4.6 lbs (tool only), this chainsaw is 61% lighter and 3X more compact than previous models, reducing user fatigue during extended use. The compact design allows for easy access to tight spaces, and an integrated tip guard provides stability during upcuts. The tool also features auto-oiling for continuous lubrication, ensuring smooth operation and chain longevity.

2. Important Safety Information

Always read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before operating the chainsaw. Failure to follow these warnings may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear when operating the chainsaw.

General Chainsaw Safety Guidelines:

  • Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the chainsaw is operating.
  • Always hold the chainsaw with both hands when the engine is running.
  • Ensure your work area is clear of obstacles and other people.
  • Do not operate a chainsaw in a tree.
  • Be aware of kickback, which can occur when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar contacts an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.
  • Never operate the chainsaw when you are tired, ill, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

To install the battery, align the battery pack with the rails inside the tool's battery interface and slide it in until it clicks securely into place. To remove, press the battery release button and pull the battery pack out of the tool.

4.2 Chain and Bar Installation/Adjustment

The chainsaw features tool-free chain tensioning. To adjust the chain tension, loosen the side cover nut (using the included onboard wrench if necessary), then turn the tensioning screw until the chain has the correct tension (snug but still able to be pulled around the bar by hand). Ensure the chain is properly seated in the guide bar groove. For full chain or bar replacement, refer to the detailed instructions in the complete manual.

4.3 Oiling the Chainsaw

The DCCS623B features an auto-oiling system for continuous lubrication of the bar and chain. Before each use, ensure the oil reservoir is filled with appropriate bar and chain oil. To fill, unscrew the oil cap, pour oil into the reservoir, and replace the cap securely. The translucent oil tank allows for easy monitoring of oil levels.

5. Operating Instructions

To operate the chainsaw, first ensure the battery is installed and the oil reservoir is filled. To start the chainsaw, press the safety button located on the handle with your thumb, then squeeze the trigger. Release the safety button once the chain begins to move. Always maintain a firm grip with both hands during operation.

Pruning and Cutting Techniques:

  • Small Branches: For branches up to 8 inches in diameter, position the chainsaw firmly against the branch and allow the chain to cut through.
  • Upcuts: Utilize the integrated tip guard for stability when performing upcuts, which helps prevent kickback.
  • Larger Limbs: For limbs approaching the maximum cutting capacity, make an undercut first to prevent pinching, then complete the cut from the top.
  • Clearance: The compact design is ideal for reaching branches in tight spaces.
