4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Barrel Placement
- Choose a location near a downspout that is on a firm, level surface. The flat-back design allows the barrel to sit closely against a wall or structure.
- Ensure the chosen location can support the weight of a full 50-gallon barrel (approximately 417 pounds or 189 kg).
4.2 Rain Diverter System Installation
The included diverter system is designed for easy integration with standard downspouts (2-inch by 3-inch or 3-inch by 4-inch). Detailed illustrative instructions are provided with the diverter kit for precise cutting and fitting of your downspout.
- Measure and mark the downspout where the diverter will be installed.
- Cut a section out of the downspout according to the diverter kit instructions.
- Insert the diverter into the cut section of the downspout, ensuring a secure fit.
- Connect the main hose from the diverter to the inlet on the rain barrel.
- Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.

4.3 Integrated Planter
The top of the rain barrel features an integrated planter. This planter includes built-in weep holes to ensure proper drainage and prevent plant roots from becoming overwatered. You can plant flowers or other suitable vegetation in this area.

5. Operation
5.1 Rainwater Collection
Once installed, the diverter system will automatically channel rainwater from your downspout into the barrel. When the barrel reaches its 50-gallon capacity, the diverter will automatically redirect excess water back through the downspout, preventing overflow.
5.2 Using Collected Water
The rain barrel is equipped with an outlet hose connection. You can attach a standard garden hose or soaker hose to this connection to water nearby plants or fill watering cans. Use the ball cock valve on the diverter to control water flow if necessary.
6. Maintenance
- Regular Cleaning: Periodically inspect the inside of the barrel and the diverter system for debris, leaves, or sediment buildup. Clean as needed to ensure optimal water flow and quality.
- Winterization: Before the first freeze, completely drain the rain barrel. Disconnect the diverter hose and store it indoors if possible. Ensure the spigot is open to allow any remaining water to escape and prevent ice damage.
- Leak Inspection: Regularly check all connections, including the diverter and spigot, for any signs of leaks. Tighten connections or replace gaskets if necessary.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No water collecting in barrel. | Diverter not installed correctly; downspout blockage; hose kinked. | Review diverter installation instructions. Clear any downspout blockages. Straighten hose. |
| Barrel overflowing prematurely. | Diverter overflow mechanism blocked or faulty. | Inspect diverter for debris. Ensure proper installation of overflow redirection. |
| Water leaking from connections. | Loose connections; damaged gaskets. | Tighten all hose and diverter connections. Replace any worn or damaged gaskets. |
| Water flow from spigot is slow. | Spigot partially closed; internal blockage; low water level. | Ensure spigot is fully open. Check for debris inside the barrel near the spigot. Wait for more rainfall. |
