4. Setup

Before using your UV-17R radio, ensure it is properly assembled and charged.

4.1 Attaching the Antenna

Screw the desired antenna (21CM or 38CM 771) clockwise into the antenna connector on top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

4.2 Installing the Battery

Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio and slide it upwards until it clicks into place. Use the provided screwdriver to tighten the battery tightening screw for a secure fit and enhanced water protection.

5. Charging the Battery

The UV-17R offers two convenient charging methods:

5.1 Type-C USB Charging

Connect the provided Type-C USB cable to the Type-C charging port on the battery pack. Plug the other end into a compatible USB power source (e.g., wall adapter, power bank, car charger). The Type-C charging indicator will illuminate during charging.

5.2 Base Charging

Place the radio into the provided desktop charging base. Ensure the radio makes proper contact with the charging terminals. Connect the base charger to a power outlet. This method is designed for efficient charging and can help extend battery life.

6. Operation

6.1 Power On/Off

To power on the radio, rotate the Power/Volume knob (7) clockwise until you hear a click and the display illuminates. To power off, rotate the knob counter-clockwise until it clicks.

6.2 Channel Mode and Frequency Mode

The UV-17R supports 999 memory channels for pre-programmed frequencies and a frequency mode for direct frequency input. Use the appropriate keys to switch between modes and navigate channels or frequencies.

6.3 VOX Mode (Voice Operated Exchange)

Activate VOX mode for hands-free communication. When enabled, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, eliminating the need to press the PTT key. Refer to the user manual for detailed VOX sensitivity settings.

6.4 NOAA Weather Alert

The UV-17R supports NOAA weather service, allowing it to scan 10 NOAA Weather channels. When the weather alarm function is activated, the radio will alert you to severe weather risks, providing crucial time for preparation.

6.5 Wireless Frequency Copy

This feature allows you to quickly clone the frequency and privacy code from another walkie-talkie without needing computer programming. Long press the MENU button to enter the "FQSCAN" interface, then press MENU again to search for the other radio's transmission frequency and privacy code. Finally, press MENU to store the frequency.

6.6 LED Flashlight

The radio is equipped with a powerful LED flashlight located at the bottom. This feature can be activated for illumination in dark environments, serving as a useful tool in emergencies or low-light conditions.

6.7 FM Radio

The UV-17R can also receive FM broadcast radio. This feature allows users to listen to local FM stations for entertainment or news when not actively using the two-way communication functions.

7. Programming

The BAOFENG UV-17R supports programming via Chirp software (compatible programming software: UV-17Pro). This allows for advanced customization of channels, frequencies, and other radio settings through a computer.
