5. Pre-Installation Considerations

5.1 Opening Measurement Guidelines

Ensure your door opening is compatible with the double barn door system. The recommended fit for a double 18"x84" door set is for openings with a width of ≤34" and a height of ≤82".

Table showing various double door sizes and their corresponding fit opening width and height requirements.

5.2 Required Clearances

Observe the following critical dimensions for proper installation:

  • Door Height: 84 inches.
  • Door Width (each): 18 inches.
  • Fixed Distance (Wall's Holes to Floor): 85 11/16 inches.
  • Minimum Distance from Rail Hole to Ceiling: 6 inches.

5.3 Wall Preparation

It is crucial to mount the track to solid wood studs or a header board securely fastened to studs. If your studs do not align with the pre-drilled holes in the track, install a sturdy header board (e.g., 1x4 or 1x6) above the door opening, spanning the entire length of the track, and secure it into wall studs. The track will then be mounted to this header board.

6. Setup and Installation

The door panels are pre-assembled, simplifying the setup process. Follow these general steps for installation. Refer to the detailed instructions included in your package for precise measurements and hardware-specific guidance.

Flowchart showing the seven main steps for quick and easy barn door installation: 1. Prepare the assembled doors, 2. Install barn door track, 3. Install hangers, 4. Attach to the track, 5. Install the handle, 6. Install floor guides, 7. Finish.

6.1 Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Prepare the Assembled Doors: The two 18"x84" door panels are ready for hardware attachment. Each door features pre-drilled holes for hangers and a pre-made groove at the bottom for the floor guide.
  2. Install Barn Door Track:
    • Measure and mark the installation height on the wall according to the provided instructions (refer to Figure 5.2 for fixed distance from floor).
    • Locate wall studs or ensure your header board is securely installed.
    • Mount the 6.6FT sliding track to the wall using the provided fasteners. Ensure the track is perfectly level.

  3. Install Hangers: Attach the roller hangers to the top edge of each door panel using the pre-drilled holes and supplied hardware. Ensure they are securely tightened.
  4. Attach Doors to the Track: Carefully lift each door panel and hook the roller hangers onto the installed sliding track.
  5. Install the Handle: Attach the double-sided handle to the pre-drilled holes on the door panels.
  6. Close-up image showing the installation of the black barn door handle onto the white door panel, with screws visible.

  7. Install Floor Guides: Position and secure the floor guide(s) to the floor directly beneath the door panels, aligning with the pre-made grooves at the bottom of each door. This prevents the doors from swinging out.
  8. Close-up image of the black floor guide installed on the floor, engaging with the pre-made groove at the bottom of the white barn door panel.

  9. Adjust and Finish: Install end bumpers on the track to prevent doors from rolling off. Test the smooth operation of the doors. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment and function.

7. Operation

To operate your SMARTSTANDARD Double Barn Doors, simply grasp the handle and slide the door panels along the track. The rollers are designed for smooth and quiet movement. Ensure the path of the doors is clear of obstructions before sliding.

8. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your barn door system.

  • Cleaning: The PVC-coated door surface is waterproof and scratch-resistant, making it easy to clean. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe down the door panels and hardware. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
  • Close-up of a hand wiping a white PVC-coated surface with a white cloth, demonstrating the easy-to-clean and waterproof nature of the door material. A cross-section of the door material shows layers of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF).

  • Hardware Inspection: Periodically check all screws and fasteners on the track, hangers, and handle to ensure they remain tight. Tighten any loose components.
  • Track and Roller Lubrication: If the doors begin to feel stiff or noisy, apply a silicone-based lubricant to the track and roller wheels. Do not use oil-based lubricants, as they can attract dust and debris.
  • Floor Guide: Keep the floor guide free of debris to allow the door's bottom groove to slide smoothly.

9. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SMARTSTANDARD barn door, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Doors are difficult to slide:
    • Check if the track is level. An unlevel track can cause resistance.
    • Inspect the track for debris or obstructions.
    • Lubricate the rollers and track with a silicone spray.
    • Ensure all hanger bolts are tight and rollers are properly seated on the track.
  • Doors are noisy during operation:
    • Lubricate the rollers and track.
    • Check for loose hardware that might be rattling.
  • Doors swing out from the wall:
    • Ensure the floor guide is properly installed and aligned with the door's bottom groove.
    • Verify the floor guide is securely fastened to the floor.
  • Gap between doors when closed:
    • This can sometimes be adjusted by slightly loosening the first few mounting bolts on the track and adjusting the track height until the gap is even, then re-tightening.
    • Consider using smaller, low-profile bumpers if the provided bumper creates too large a gap.
