VIHELM MD-6350

VIHELM MD-6350 Underground Metal Detector User Manual

Model: MD-6350

Introduction

The VIHELM MD-6350 is a high-sensitivity underground metal detector designed for efficient treasure hunting and metal detection. It features a "DD" waterproof detection panel, enabling it to identify various types of metals individually and perform precise identification operations.

A key advantage of the MD-6350 is its selective detection capability. It can differentiate between gold, silver, copper, iron, and other metals. This allows users to focus on specific target metals, such as gold, while excluding others. The detector also offers an "all metal" mode for comprehensive scanning. This advanced discrimination feature significantly reduces interference from mineralized ground and unwanted metallic debris.

Key features include an LCD display for showing detected objects, unwanted target elimination, a waterproof speaker, and a headphone jack for audio feedback. The adjustable stem ensures comfortable use for various heights, and the robust design ensures reliable performance.

Figure 2: Detailed diagram illustrating the main parts of the MD-6350 metal detector, including the search coil, battery housing, LCD screen, S-shaped ramrod stem, padded armrest, handle grip, and arc stand.

Before assembly, ensure all components are present and undamaged. Refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a visual guide to the parts.

Setup and Assembly

  1. Attach the Search Coil: Connect the search coil to the lower stem using the provided knob, threaded bolt, and washer. Ensure it is securely fastened but allows for slight angle adjustment.
  2. Assemble the Stem: Connect the lower stem to the middle stem, and then the middle stem to the upper stem (S-shaped ramrod stem). Use the spring clips to lock the sections in place.
  3. Attach the Control Unit: Slide the control unit onto the upper stem. Ensure the cable from the search coil can reach the cable interface on the control unit.
  4. Connect the Cable: Plug the search coil cable into the cable interface on the control unit. The mini plug connecting the search coil and the controller unit is made of metal for reliability.
  5. Install Batteries: Open the battery housing on the control unit. Insert 4 x 1.5V AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Close the battery housing securely.
  6. Adjust Armrest and Handle: Adjust the padded armrest and handle grip for comfortable operation. The stem length can be adjusted from 42.5 to 51.2 inches to suit the user's height.

Control Panel Overview

VIHELM MD-6350 LCD Control Panel

Figure 4: Detailed view of the MD-6350 LCD control panel, showing target ID legend, discrimination pattern, mode settings, sensitivity, discrim, accept/reject, pinpoint, target ID cursor, coin depth indicator, and battery indicator.

  • Power On/Off: Press the "MODE" button to power on the detector. Press and hold to power off.
  • Battery Status Indicator: The LCD screen displays the current battery level. Replace batteries when the indicator shows low power.
  • Sensitivity: Adjust the sensitivity using the dedicated buttons to optimize detection depth and reduce false signals. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase interference.
  • Discrimination (DISCRIM): Use the "DISCRIM" function to eliminate unwanted metals from detection. The discrimination pattern on the LCD shows which metal types are being ignored.
  • Accept/Reject: Use in conjunction with the DISCRIM function to fine-tune which targets are accepted or rejected.
  • Search Modes: The MD-6350 offers various search modes, including:
    • Jewelry Mode: Optimized for detecting jewelry.
    • Custom Mode: Allows user-defined discrimination settings.
    • Relics Mode: Designed for finding historical artifacts.
    • Coins Mode: Specifically tuned for coin detection.
    • Zero Mode (All Metal): Detects all types of metals without discrimination.
Select the desired mode using the "MODE" button.
  • Target ID Legend & Cursor: The LCD displays a target ID legend and a cursor that indicates the probable type of detected metal (e.g., ferrous, non-ferrous, specific coin types).
  • Coin Depth Indicator: Provides an approximate depth of detected coin-sized targets.
  • Pinpoint (PINPOINT): Press the "PINPOINT" button to narrow down the exact location of a detected target. Move the coil slowly over the target area until the strongest signal is heard/seen.
  • Headphone Jack: Connect stereo or mono headphones to the headphone jack for private listening and clearer audio signals. Adjust volume using the control unit.

Searching Techniques

  • Sweeping: Hold the search coil parallel to the ground, about 1-2 inches above the surface. Sweep the coil slowly from side to side in overlapping motions.
  • Overlap: Ensure each sweep overlaps the previous one by about half the coil's diameter to avoid missing targets.
  • Slow Movement: Move the coil slowly. Moving too fast can cause you to miss targets or generate unclear signals.
  • Target Response: When a target is detected, the detector will emit an audio tone, and the LCD will display target information.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in dirty or wet conditions, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth. The "DD" search coil is waterproof, allowing for easy cleaning. Avoid submerging the control unit.
  • Battery Care: Remove batteries if the detector will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage. Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
  • Storage: Store the metal detector in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If disassembling for storage, ensure all components are clean and dry.
  • Cable Inspection: Periodically check the search coil cable for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure the connection to the control unit is secure.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No power or detector does not turn on.Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.Check battery polarity. Replace with fresh 4 x 1.5V AA batteries.
Erratic signals or false positives.High sensitivity setting; electromagnetic interference; mineralized ground.Reduce sensitivity. Move away from power lines or other electronic devices. Use discrimination to filter out unwanted signals.
No detection or weak signals.Low sensitivity; search coil not parallel to ground; coil cable loose.Increase sensitivity. Ensure search coil is swept parallel to the ground. Check and secure the search coil cable connection.
LCD display is dim or blank.Low battery power.Replace batteries.
