2. Safety Information

  • Water Resistance: While rated for 200m, this watch is suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not for diving. Do not operate the crown or pushers underwater. Ensure the crown is fully screwed down before any water exposure.
  • Temperature Extremes: Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperatures (below 0°C / 32°F or above 60°C / 140°F) or sudden temperature changes, as this can affect accuracy and seals.
  • Magnetic Fields: Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields (e.g., speakers, refrigerators, mobile phones) as magnetism can affect the movement's accuracy.
  • Chemicals: Avoid contact with solvents, detergents, perfumes, and cosmetics, which can damage the case, strap, or seals.
  • Impact: Protect the watch from strong shocks or impacts.

3. Setup

3.1 Initial Winding

Your Orient "Mako-3" watch is equipped with an automatic movement that can also be hand-wound. Before wearing for the first time or after a period of inactivity, it is recommended to hand-wind the watch to build up a power reserve.

  1. Unscrew the crown by turning it counter-clockwise until it springs out to the first position (Position 0).
  2. Turn the crown clockwise approximately 30-40 times. This will provide sufficient power to start the watch.
  3. Push the crown back in and screw it down tightly clockwise to ensure water resistance.

3.2 Setting Time and Date

To set the time and date on your watch:

  1. Unscrew the crown by turning it counter-clockwise until it springs out (Position 0).
  2. Gently pull the crown out to the second click (Position 2) to set the time. The second hand will stop (hacking feature).
  3. Turn the crown to set the hour and minute hands. To avoid issues with the date change, it is recommended to set the time to 6:00 AM.
  4. Push the crown in one click to Position 1 to set the date and day. Turn the crown clockwise to adjust the date and counter-clockwise to adjust the day. Avoid setting the date/day between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM, as this is when the date change mechanism is engaged.
  5. Once the date and day are set, pull the crown back out to Position 2. Advance the time past 12:00 PM (noon) if the current time is in the afternoon. Continue setting the correct time.
  6. Push the crown back in to Position 0 and screw it down tightly clockwise to ensure water resistance.

3.3 Adjusting Bracelet

The metal bracelet can be adjusted by adding or removing links. This procedure often requires specialized tools and precision. It is highly recommended to have this adjustment performed by a qualified watchmaker or jeweler to prevent damage to the bracelet or watch.

4. Operating

4.1 Automatic Movement (Caliber F6922)

Your Orient "Mako-3" watch is powered by an in-house automatic mechanical movement. This means the watch is wound by the motion of your arm while wearing it. When fully wound, the movement has a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. If the watch is not worn for an extended period, it will stop. Simply hand-wind it as described in Section 3.1 or wear it for a few hours to restart it.

4.2 Water Resistance (200m / 660ft)

The watch is water resistant to 200 meters (660 feet). This rating indicates suitability for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports. It is crucial to ensure the screw-down crown is fully tightened before any exposure to water to maintain this water resistance. This watch is not designed for saturation diving.

4.3 Unidirectional Rotating Bezel

The watch features a unidirectional rotating bezel, which is a common tool for divers to measure elapsed time. The bezel rotates only counter-clockwise to prevent accidental increases in measured time, which could be critical during a dive.

  1. Align the triangle marker on the bezel with the minute hand at the start of an event (e.g., a dive or cooking time).
  2. As time passes, the minute hand will point to the elapsed time on the bezel's scale.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To maintain the appearance of your watch:

  • Wipe the case and crystal with a soft, dry cloth regularly.
  • For the metal bracelet, use a soft brush and soapy water to clean dirt from between the links. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry completely with a soft cloth. Ensure the crown is screwed down before cleaning with water.

5.2 Storage

When not wearing your watch for an extended period, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and strong magnetic fields. The original watch box (Figure 5.1) is ideal for storage.

5.3 Periodic Service

Like any precision mechanical instrument, your watch requires periodic servicing to ensure optimal performance and longevity. It is recommended to have your watch inspected and serviced by an authorized Orient service center every 3-5 years. This service typically includes cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment of the movement, as well as replacement of seals to maintain water resistance.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your automatic watch.

ProblemPossible Cause & Solution
Watch has stopped or is running slow.Cause: Insufficient power reserve.
Solution: Hand-wind the watch approximately 30-40 times (Section 3.1) or wear it continuously for several hours to build up the power reserve.
Date/Day does not change at midnight.Cause: AM/PM setting is incorrect.
Solution: Advance the time by 12 hours. Ensure the date changes around midnight, not noon.
Condensation under the crystal.Cause: Exposure to extreme temperature changes or compromised water resistance.
Solution: Immediately take the watch to an authorized service center. Do not attempt to dry it yourself.
Crown does not screw down.Cause: Cross-threading or debris in the threads.
Solution: Gently push the crown in and turn it counter-clockwise a small amount until you feel it drop into the thread, then turn clockwise to screw down. If it still doesn't screw down, do not force it; seek professional assistance.
