Setup
1. Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the HD400 meter.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert the supplied 9V battery, observing the correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
2. Connecting the Light Sensor
- Connect the cable from the light sensor to the input jack located at the top of the HD400 meter.
- Ensure the connection is firm.
- Remove the protective cover from the light sensor before taking measurements.

3. Software Installation (Optional)
For data logging and analysis, install the Windows compatible software:
- Insert the software CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
- Connect the HD400 meter to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
- Refer to the software's help documentation for detailed usage instructions.
Operating Instructions
Powering On/Off
- Press the POWER button to turn the meter on or off.
- The meter features an Auto Power Off (APO) function to conserve battery life.
Taking Measurements
- Ensure the light sensor is positioned in the area where light intensity is to be measured. The sensor should be facing the light source.
- The current light reading will be displayed on the large backlit LCD.

Function Buttons
- UNITS: Press to toggle between Foot-candles (Fc) and Lux units.
- RANGE: Press to manually select the measurement range. The meter also has an auto-ranging feature.
- MAX/MIN: Press to display the maximum or minimum light reading recorded since the meter was powered on or the function was reset.
- PEAK: Activates Peak mode, capturing the highest reading over a 10mS period. Useful for measuring short light flashes.
- REL (Relative): Activates Relative mode. This sets the current reading as a reference point (zero), and subsequent readings show the deviation from this reference.
- HOLD: Freezes the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
- BACKLIGHT: Press the light bulb icon button to turn the display backlight on or off for improved visibility in low-light conditions.
Maintenance
Cleaning
- Wipe the meter and sensor with a dry, clean, soft cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Keep the light sensor clean and free of dust or smudges to ensure accurate readings.
Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as described in the "Battery Installation" section under Setup.
Storage
- If storing the meter for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage.
- Store the meter in its hard carrying case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
