3.2 Attaching the Removable Frames

The Donner HUSH I includes removable frames for comfortable playing. Align the frame rods with the designated slots on the guitar body and gently push until they click into place. Ensure they are securely fastened before use. To remove, press the release buttons (if present) or pull firmly but carefully.

3.3 Battery Installation

The guitar requires one 9V battery for its preamp system. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the guitar body. Open the compartment, insert the 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-), and close the cover securely.

3.4 Tuning the Guitar

The HUSH I features bottom tuners. Use the provided tuning key, stored in its hidden magnetic compartment, to adjust the string tension. Attach the clip-on tuner to the guitar body or frame for accurate tuning. Tune each string to the standard E-A-D-G-B-E (low to high) or your desired tuning.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Connecting Audio Output

The HUSH I offers two main audio output options:

  • Headphone Output: For silent practice, connect your headphones to the 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Amplifier/Speaker Output: For amplified sound, connect a 6.35mm (1/4 inch) instrument cable from the guitar's 6.35mm output jack to an amplifier or audio interface.

4.2 Using the Preamp Controls

The guitar's preamp system includes controls for volume, tone (2-stage EQ), and phase. These controls are located on the side of the guitar body.

  • Volume Knob: Adjusts the overall output level of the guitar.
  • EQ Knobs (Low/High): Allows for shaping the bass and treble frequencies of your tone. Turn clockwise to boost, counter-clockwise to cut.
  • Phase Button: Engages an anti-phase function to reduce feedback and unwanted noise, particularly useful in amplified settings.

4.3 Silent Practice

To engage in silent practice, simply plug your headphones into the 3.5mm jack. The guitar's natural acoustic sound is minimal, allowing for discreet practice without disturbing others.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Wipe the guitar body and neck with a soft, dry cloth after each use to remove sweat and fingerprints. For deeper cleaning, use a guitar-specific cleaning solution applied to a cloth, not directly to the instrument.

5.2 String Replacement

Strings should be replaced regularly to maintain optimal tone and playability. The HUSH I uses standard steel guitar strings. Refer to online resources or a qualified technician for detailed string replacement instructions if unfamiliar with the process for headless guitars.

5.3 Battery Replacement

Replace the 9V battery when the sound becomes weak or distorted, or if the preamp system fails to power on. Follow the instructions in Section 3.3 for safe battery replacement.

5.4 Neck Curvature Adjustment (Truss Rod)

The guitar's neck curvature can be adjusted using the truss rod to optimize string action and prevent buzzing. This adjustment should be performed by an experienced individual or a qualified guitar technician.

  • Checking Curvature: Hold the guitar in playing position. Press the first string at the first fret and also at the last fret. Measure the gap between the string and the 8th fret. The ideal gap is typically 0.1-0.2mm.
  • Adjusting: Use the hidden tuning key to turn the truss rod. Clockwise rotation can correct a concave neck (string too high). Counter-clockwise rotation can correct a convex neck (buzzing due to excessive neck protrusion).

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 No Sound or Weak Output

  • Check Battery: Ensure the 9V battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
  • Cable Connection: Verify that all audio cables (headphones or 6.35mm output) are securely connected to both the guitar and the receiving device (headphones, amplifier, interface).
  • Volume Controls: Ensure the guitar's volume knob and the volume on your connected device are turned up.
  • Connected Device: Test with a different set of headphones or amplifier to rule out issues with the external equipment.

6.2 Buzzing or Unwanted Noise

  • String Action: If buzzing occurs, the string action might be too low. Consider adjusting the neck curvature (truss rod) as described in Section 5.4.
  • Loose Components: Check for any loose screws on the bridge, tuners, or removable frames.
  • Phase Button: Engage the anti-phase button on the preamp to reduce feedback or hum, especially when amplified.
  • Grounding Issues: If connected to an amplifier, ensure proper grounding of all equipment.

6.3 Tuning Instability

  • New Strings: New strings require stretching and will go out of tune frequently for the first few days.
  • String Installation: Ensure strings are properly installed and seated in the tuners.
  • Environmental Changes: Extreme changes in temperature or humidity can affect tuning stability. Allow the guitar to acclimate.
