Figure 2: Rear panel connections. This image shows the back of the em-trak Great Product, highlighting the two primary connection ports. On the left is the 'POWER/0183' port, a multi-pin circular connector for power input and NMEA 0183 data. On the right is the 'NMEA 2000' port, a standard five-pin circular connector for NMEA 2000 network integration. A small, recessed port is also visible between them.

  • POWER/0183 Port: Connect the provided power cable to this port. This port also supports NMEA 0183 data input/output. Ensure the connection is secure to prevent power interruptions.
  • NMEA 2000 Port: Connect your NMEA 2000 network cable to this port for seamless integration with other marine electronics. This allows for data sharing across your vessel's network.

Antenna Connections

The front panel of the device features connections for various antennas.

Figure 3: Front panel antenna connections. This image displays the front side of the em-trak Great Product, featuring three coaxial antenna connectors. From left to right, these are labeled 'ANTENNA' (likely for AIS), 'VHF RADIO' (for a dedicated VHF antenna), and 'GNSS' (for the GPS/GNSS antenna). Each port is a standard threaded coaxial connector, designed for secure and reliable antenna attachment.

  • ANTENNA Port: Connect your primary AIS antenna to this port. This is essential for transmitting and receiving AIS signals.
  • VHF RADIO Port: If applicable, connect your VHF radio antenna here. This port is typically used for dedicated VHF communication.
  • GNSS Port: Connect your GNSS (GPS) antenna to this port. A strong GNSS signal is required for accurate positioning and timing data.

Ensure all connections are tightened securely to maintain signal integrity and prevent water ingress, as the device is waterproof.

Operating Instructions

Once properly installed and powered on, the em-trak Great Product will begin its operational sequence.

  • Power On: After connecting power, the device will automatically power on. Observe the indicator lights on the top panel (refer to Figure 1) to confirm operational status.
  • Self-Test: The device performs a self-test upon startup. Any errors will be indicated by specific light patterns or through connected display units.
  • Data Transmission: Once a valid GNSS fix is acquired and all necessary data is configured (e.g., vessel details via connected MFD), the device will begin transmitting AIS data.
  • Monitoring: Monitor the device's status through your connected chartplotter or display. Ensure that AIS targets are being received and your own vessel's data is being transmitted correctly.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your em-trak Great Product.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the device with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Connection Checks: Regularly inspect all cable connections (power, NMEA 2000, antennas) for corrosion or looseness. Tighten connections as needed.
  • Software Updates: Check the em-trak official website for any available firmware updates. Keeping the software updated ensures access to the latest features and bug fixes.
  • Environmental Protection: Although the device is waterproof, ensure it is installed in a location that minimizes exposure to extreme temperatures or direct, prolonged sunlight.

Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
