5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
The VOLTCRAFT VC272 Multimeter is powered by batteries. To install or replace the batteries:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and all test leads are disconnected.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit (refer to Figure 4.4).
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw securing the battery compartment cover.
- Remove the cover.
- Insert 3 x 1.5V AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and tighten the screw.
Note: Always use fresh batteries of the specified type. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.
6. Operating Instructions
This section details how to perform various measurements with your VC272 Multimeter.
6.1 Measuring AC/DC Voltage (V)
- Insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red test lead into the VΩHz°C/°F jack.
- Turn the function switch to the "V" position. The meter will automatically detect AC or DC voltage (Auto Range).
- Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component you wish to measure.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
- Use the LoZ button for low impedance voltage measurement to avoid ghost voltages.
6.2 Measuring AC/DC Current (A, mA, µA)
- Important: Current measurements require the meter to be connected in series with the circuit. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting.
- For currents up to 600mA, insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red test lead into the mAµA jack.
- For currents up to 10A, insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red test lead into the 10A max jack.
- Turn the function switch to the "mAµA" or "10A max" position. The meter will automatically detect AC or DC current.
- Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series.
- Apply power to the circuit and read the current value on the display.
6.3 Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red test lead into the VΩHz°C/°F jack.
- Turn the function switch to the "Ω" position.
- Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Connect the test leads across the component.
- Read the resistance value on the display.
6.4 Continuity Test
- Insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red test lead into the VΩHz°C/°F jack.
- Turn the function switch to the "Ω" position and press the SEL button until the continuity symbol (buzzer icon) appears on the display.
- Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
- If the resistance is below approximately 50Ω, the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity.
6.5 Diode Test
- Insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red test lead into the VΩHz°C/°F jack.
- Turn the function switch to the "Ω" position and press the SEL button until the diode symbol appears on the display.
- Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
- Read the forward voltage drop on the display. Reverse the leads to check for open circuit (OL).
6.6 Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection
- Turn the function switch to the "NCV" position.
- Move the top of the multimeter near a live AC voltage source (e.g., a wire, outlet).
- The NCV indicator light will illuminate and the buzzer will sound, with intensity increasing as the meter gets closer to the voltage source.
6.7 Using the Flashlight and Backlight
- To activate the display backlight, short press the HOLD/LIGHT button. Press again to turn off.
- To activate the flashlight, long press the HOLD/LIGHT button. Long press again to turn off.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input terminals free of dirt and moisture.
7.2 Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the specifications for the correct fuse type and rating. Fuse replacement typically involves opening the back casing of the multimeter. If unsure, consult a qualified technician.
7.3 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the multimeter in a dry, cool place. Remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Dead or low batteries | Replace batteries (refer to Section 5.1) |
| "OL" (Overload) displayed | Input value exceeds range; open circuit (for resistance/continuity) | Select a higher range (if available); check circuit connection; ensure circuit is closed for continuity/resistance. |
| Inaccurate readings | Low battery; incorrect range/function selected; dirty test leads/jacks | Replace batteries; verify function switch and lead connections; clean terminals. |
| Current measurement not working | Blown fuse | Replace fuse (refer to Section 7.2) |
