4.1 Drive Installation
The TS-464-8G-US is a diskless model, requiring you to install hard drives (HDDs) or solid-state drives (SSDs) separately. It supports both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives.
- Ensure the NAS is powered off and disconnected from the power source.
- Locate the drive trays on the front of the NAS.
- Pull the latch to release and remove a drive tray.
- Place your 3.5-inch HDD into the tray and secure it with the provided flat head screws (12 screws for 3.5" HDDs). For 2.5-inch SSDs/HDDs, use the smaller flat head screws (12 screws for 2.5" HDDs).
- Slide the tray back into the drive bay until it clicks into place.
- Repeat for all desired drives.
The NAS also features dual M.2 PCIe Gen3x2 NVMe SSD slots for cache acceleration or efficient tiered storage. Refer to the Quick Installation Guide for detailed instructions on M.2 SSD installation.

5. Operating the NAS
5.1 Accessing the NAS
After initial setup, you can access your NAS through a web browser using QNAP's QTS operating system. Use the QNAP Qfinder Pro utility (available on the QNAP website) to locate your NAS on the network and access its web interface.
- Install Qfinder Pro on a computer connected to the same network as the NAS.
- Launch Qfinder Pro and it will discover your NAS.
- Double-click on your NAS in Qfinder Pro to open the QTS web interface in your browser.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for initial configuration, including setting up an administrator password and storage pools.
5.2 File Management
QTS provides a comprehensive File Station application for managing files and folders on your NAS. You can create shared folders, set user permissions, and access your data from various devices.
- Creating Shared Folders: Navigate to Control Panel > Privilege > Shared Folders to create and configure shared directories.
- User Access: Manage user accounts and groups under Control Panel > Privilege > Users to control access to shared resources.
- Remote Access: Utilize QNAP's MyQNAPCloud service to securely access your files from anywhere over the internet.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Firmware Updates
Regularly update your NAS firmware (QTS) to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to new features. You can check for updates via the QTS web interface under Control Panel > System > Firmware Update.
6.2 Drive Health Monitoring
Monitor the health of your installed drives using the Storage & Snapshots application in QTS. This tool provides S.M.A.R.T. information and allows you to perform disk scans to detect potential issues early.
6.3 Cleaning
To maintain proper airflow and prevent overheating, periodically clean the exterior of the NAS and ensure ventilation openings are free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the device.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Common Issues and Solutions
- NAS not powering on:
Ensure the power cord and AC adaptor are securely connected to both the NAS and a working power outlet. Test the outlet with another device. - NAS not detected on network:
Verify that the Ethernet cable is properly connected to both the NAS and your router/switch. Check the LAN indicator on the NAS. Restart your router and the NAS. Use Qfinder Pro to scan for the device. - Slow performance:
Check network cable quality (use CAT5e or higher for 2.5GbE). Monitor CPU and memory usage in QTS Resource Monitor. Ensure drives are healthy and not overloaded. Consider adding M.2 SSDs for cache acceleration. - Drive errors or failures:
Check the drive indicators on the front panel. Consult the Storage & Snapshots application in QTS for detailed drive status. If a drive has failed, replace it according to the instructions in the QTS documentation. - Cannot access shared folders:
Verify user permissions in QTS Control Panel. Ensure the shared folder is properly configured and accessible. Check network connectivity.
