5. Setup

5.1 Driver Installation (Windows Users)

For optimal performance on Windows operating systems, it is recommended to install the dedicated ASIO driver before connecting the audio interface to your computer. This driver ensures low-latency performance and full compatibility with your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

  1. Visit the official Kmise support website (refer to the product packaging or manufacturer's website for the exact URL).
  2. Locate and download the latest ASIO driver for the Kmise 2i2 Audio Interface.
  3. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Restart your computer if prompted.

Note for macOS Users: The Kmise 2i2 is class-compliant with macOS and typically does not require additional driver installation. It should be recognized automatically by your system.

5.2 Connecting the Interface

  1. Connect the USB-C cable from the rear panel of the Kmise 2i2 to an available USB port on your computer. The device is bus-powered, so no external power supply is needed.
  2. Allow your computer to recognize the device. This may take a few moments.

5.3 Connecting Microphones and Instruments

  • Microphones: Plug your microphone into one of the Combo Inputs on the front panel using an XLR cable. If using a condenser microphone, press the 48V button to activate phantom power.
  • Instruments: Plug your instrument (e.g., guitar, bass) into one of the Combo Inputs using a 1/4" TS or TRS cable. Press the INST button for the corresponding channel to optimize the input for instrument-level signals.
  • Line-Level Devices: For line-level sources (e.g., synthesizers, external preamps), use a 1/4" TRS cable and ensure the LINE button is engaged for the corresponding channel.

5.4 Connecting Headphones and Speakers

  • Headphones: Connect your headphones to the 1/4" TRS Headphone Output on the front panel.
  • Speakers: Connect your studio monitors or speakers to the Left and Right TRS Balanced Outputs on the rear panel using 1/4" TRS cables.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Adjusting Input Gain

Use the individual Gain knobs for each input channel to set the appropriate recording level. Aim for a strong signal without clipping (distortion). The input level indicators will help you visualize the signal strength.

6.2 Using Direct Monitoring

The Direct Monitor switch allows you to hear your input signal directly through the headphone and main outputs with zero latency. This is crucial for recording, as it eliminates the delay that can occur when monitoring through your computer's software.

  • Set the Direct Monitor switch to ON to hear your live input signal.
  • Set the Direct Monitor switch to OFF if you prefer to monitor through your DAW with effects.

6.3 Adjusting Output Levels

  • The Monitor knob controls the overall volume of the main TRS balanced outputs.
  • The Power/Headphone Volume knob controls the volume of the headphone output.

6.4 Using with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)

Once connected and drivers are installed (if applicable), your Kmise 2i2 Audio Interface should appear as an available audio device in your DAW's audio settings. Select it as your input and output device to begin recording and playback.

7. Maintenance

  • Clean the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
  • Keep the device free from dust and debris.
  • Store in a cool, dry place when not in use.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 Device Not Recognized / No Sound

  • Check USB Connection: Ensure the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the interface and your computer. Try a different USB port or cable.
  • Driver Installation (Windows): Verify that the correct ASIO driver has been installed as per Section 5.1. Reinstalling the driver may resolve issues.
  • System Audio Settings: Check your computer's sound settings (System Preferences > Sound on macOS, Sound Settings > Sound Control Panel on Windows) to ensure the Kmise 2i2 is selected as the input and output device.
  • DAW Settings: Within your Digital Audio Workstation, confirm that the Kmise 2i2 is selected as the audio input/output device.
  • Restart: Try restarting your computer and reconnecting the interface.

8.2 Latency Issues

  • Direct Monitoring: Use the Direct Monitor switch (Section 6.2) to monitor your input signal directly from the interface, bypassing computer processing and eliminating latency.
  • Buffer Size: In your DAW's audio settings, try reducing the buffer size. Lower buffer sizes reduce latency but require more CPU power.
  • ASIO Driver (Windows): Ensure the ASIO driver is correctly installed and selected in your DAW.

8.3 No Phantom Power

  • Ensure the 48V button is pressed and illuminated.
  • Verify that your microphone requires phantom power. Dynamic microphones do not typically require it.
