1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the MotorGuide Xi3 Freshwater Trolling Motor. This wireless, bow-mount motor is designed to provide precise control and quiet operation for an enhanced fishing experience. Featuring a 60-inch shaft and 55-pound peak thrust, the Xi3 is equipped with a convenient wireless remote and an easy-to-read LED dashboard for monitoring key functions. Its SecureStep system ensures safe and effortless stowing and deployment.

This manual provides essential information for the safe operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your MotorGuide Xi3 trolling motor. Please read it thoroughly before use.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when operating any marine equipment. Failure to follow these instructions could result in injury or damage to the product or vessel.

  • Read and understand all instructions before installation and operation.
  • Ensure the motor is securely mounted to the boat's bow before use.
  • Always disconnect power to the motor before performing any maintenance, propeller inspection, or when the motor is not in use.
  • Keep hands, feet, and clothing clear of the propeller when the motor is powered on.
  • Do not operate the motor in areas with excessive weeds or debris that could foul the propeller.
  • This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

3. What's in the Box

4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and safety of your trolling motor. The Xi3 is designed for bow-mount installation.

4.1 Mounting the Motor

  1. Choose a flat, stable surface on the bow of your boat for mounting. Ensure sufficient clearance for deployment and stowing.
  2. Position the motor base and mark the drilling locations for the mounting bolts.
  3. Drill appropriate holes through the boat deck.
  4. Secure the motor base using the provided mounting hardware (bolts, washers, nuts). Ensure all fasteners are tightened securely.

4.2 Electrical Connection

  • The Xi3 operates on a 12-volt DC power supply. Connect the motor's power cables directly to a dedicated 12-volt deep cycle marine battery.
  • Ensure proper polarity: red to positive (+), black to negative (-).
  • Install an appropriate circuit breaker or fuse (not included) in the positive line, as close to the battery as possible, to protect the motor and wiring. The motor has a maximum draw of 52 amps.

5. Operating Instructions

The MotorGuide Xi3 is designed for intuitive operation with its wireless remote and SecureStep system.

5.1 Stowing and Deploying (SecureStep System)

  1. To deploy: From a comfortable standing position, step on the release lever located on the motor base. The motor will smoothly lower into the water. Ensure the shaft is fully extended and locked into the deployed position.
  2. To stow: From a comfortable standing position, step on the release lever. Guide the motor upwards until it locks securely into its stowed position on the mount.

5.2 Wireless Remote Control

The Xi3 comes standard with a wireless hand-held remote control, allowing you to operate the motor from anywhere on the boat.

  • Power Button: Turns the motor on/off.
  • Speed Control: Use the '+' and '-' buttons to increase or decrease motor speed.
  • Steering: Use the left and right arrow buttons to steer the motor.
  • Propeller On/Off: A dedicated button activates or deactivates the propeller.

5.3 LED Dashboard

The motor's mount features an easy-to-read LED dashboard that provides quick status updates:

  • Power ON/System Ready: Indicates the motor is powered and ready for operation.
  • Propeller ON: Illuminates when the propeller is active.
  • Battery Life: Three levels of indicators show remaining battery charge.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your MotorGuide Xi3 trolling motor.

  • After Each Use: Rinse the motor and propeller with fresh water, especially after use in saltwater or brackish water. Wipe down the motor and mount to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Propeller Inspection: Periodically check the propeller for fishing line, weeds, or other debris that may be wrapped around the shaft or blades. Remove any obstructions to prevent damage to the motor or reduced performance.
  • Battery Care: Ensure your 12-volt marine battery is properly charged and maintained according to the battery manufacturer's instructions.
  • Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections for corrosion or looseness. Clean and tighten as necessary.
  • Storage: When storing the motor for extended periods, ensure it is clean, dry, and stored in a cool, dry place. Disconnect the battery.
