Model: DT1516

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, assembly, and maintenance of your WEN DT1516 16-Inch 15-Amp 2-in-1 Electric Dethatcher and Scarifier. Please read all instructions carefully before use to ensure proper function and to prevent injury or damage.

Important Safety Information

WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury, keep hands and feet clear of rotating blades. Always wear appropriate protective gear, including eye protection, hearing protection, and sturdy footwear, when operating this equipment. Before starting, thoroughly inspect the work area for any rocks, debris, or other objects that could be thrown by the blades or cause damage to the machine. Ensure the power cord is clear of the working path to prevent accidental cutting or entanglement. Disconnect the power supply before performing any adjustments, maintenance, or when the machine is unattended.

Setup and Assembly

The WEN DT1516 requires minimal assembly. Follow these steps to prepare your unit for operation:

  1. Handle Assembly: Attach the upper handle to the lower handle using the provided hardware. Ensure all connections are secure. The handle height is adjustable for user comfort.
  2. Blade Installation: Your unit comes with two interchangeable heads: a 20-blade scarifying head and a 24-steel-tine dethatching head. Select the appropriate head for your task. Use the included Allen key to securely attach the desired head to the rotor shaft. Refer to the 'Interchangeable Heads' image for visual guidance.
  3. Collection Bag Attachment: Securely attach the detachable collection bag to the rear of the unit. Ensure it is properly seated to collect thatch and debris effectively.
  4. Power Connection: Connect the dethatcher to a suitable power outlet using a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord (12-gauge is recommended for optimal performance). Ensure the extension cord is in good condition and rated for outdoor use.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective operation of your dethatcher/scarifier:

  1. Adjusting Depth: Use the 5-position height adjustment lever to select the desired working depth. Settings range from +1/4 inch (for light dethatching) to -1/2 inch (for aggressive scarifying). Refer to the '5-Position Height Adjustment' image for details.
  2. Starting the Unit: The unit features a 2-step safe start mechanism. First, press the safety lock button, then pull the switch handle towards you to engage the motor. Release the safety lock button while keeping the switch handle pulled to maintain operation.
  3. Operation: Push the unit across your lawn in overlapping passes. The 16-inch working width allows for efficient coverage. For dethatching, use the tines to gently rake up dead grass. For scarifying, the blades will penetrate the soil to aerate and remove deeper thatch.
  4. Collection Bag: Monitor the collection bag and empty it frequently to maintain optimal performance and prevent clogging.
  5. Overload Protection: The unit is equipped with overload protection that automatically stops the motor if the blades encounter hard objects like rocks or concrete. This prevents damage to the motor and blades. If this occurs, disconnect power, clear the obstruction, and restart the unit.
