2. Setup

2.1 Unboxing and Inspection

Carefully remove the reel from its packaging. Inspect the reel for any visible damage or missing components. Ensure all parts, including the handle and spool, are securely attached and function smoothly. If any issues are found, contact customer support immediately.2.2 Mounting the Reel to a Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod.
  2. Tighten the reel seat locking nut until the reel is firmly secured. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the reel foot or rod.
  3. Ensure the reel is stable and does not wobble.

2.3 Spooling Fishing Line

Proper line spooling is crucial for optimal casting performance and to prevent tangles. Follow these steps:

  1. Pass the fishing line through the line guide on the reel.
  2. Tie the line to the spool using an arbor knot or a similar secure knot. Trim any excess tag end.
  3. Close the bail (if applicable) or engage the reel.
  4. Maintain light tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool. The line should be spooled evenly and tightly enough to prevent digging in, but not so tight that it causes spool distortion.
  5. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) from the rim. Overfilling can lead to tangles and casting issues.

3. Operating the Reel

3.1 Casting

The EPIXOR reel features an externally adjustable magnetic cast control system to help manage spool rotation during casting and minimize backlashes. Adjust the magnetic brake dial to your preference and fishing conditions. A higher setting provides more braking force, which is useful for beginners or windy conditions, while a lower setting allows for longer casts with more control required.

  1. Press the thumb bar to disengage the spool.
  2. Position your rod and make your cast.
  3. As your lure approaches the water, lightly feather the spool with your thumb to prevent overruns and backlashes.
  4. Engage the reel by turning the handle to prepare for retrieval.

3.2 Drag System Adjustment

The multi-disc carbon fiber and stainless steel drag system provides smooth and consistent drag pressure. Adjust the star drag knob located next to the handle to set the desired drag tension. Turn clockwise to increase drag, and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Set your drag to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength to prevent line breakage during a fight.

3.3 Retrieval

This reel is designed for left-hand retrieve. Turn the handle smoothly to retrieve your line. The precision machine-cut brass main and pinion gears, combined with the 6BB + 1RB stainless steel ball bearing drive system, ensure a very smooth and efficient retrieve.

3.4 Anti-Reverse Feature

The reel is equipped with a quick-set anti-reverse roller bearing, which prevents the handle from moving backward, ensuring solid hook sets and eliminating play in the handle.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will prolong the life and performance of your Okuma EPIXOR reel.

4.1 Cleaning After Use

  1. After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  2. Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  3. Allow the reel to air dry completely before storage.

4.2 Lubrication

Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knobs, spool shaft, and line guide. Apply reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear. Do not over-lubricate, as this can attract dirt and debris.

4.3 Spool Access

The easy-change palm side plate access port allows for quick removal of the spool for cleaning or maintenance. Refer to the reel's design for specific instructions on opening the side plate.

4.4 Storage

Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a reel cover or case to protect it from dust and physical damage.

5. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

  • Line Tangles/Backlashes:
Cause: Improper casting technique, incorrect magnetic brake setting, overfilled spool, or worn line.
Solution: Adjust magnetic cast control, practice casting, ensure spool is not overfilled, replace old line.
  • Drag Slipping or Inconsistent:
Cause: Drag washers are dry, dirty, or worn; drag knob not tightened sufficiently.
Solution: Clean and re-grease drag washers (use specialized drag grease), ensure drag knob is properly tightened.
  • Stiff or Grinding Retrieve:
Cause: Lack of lubrication, dirt/debris in gears, damaged bearings.
Solution: Clean and lubricate gears and bearings. If the issue persists, professional service may be required.
  • Handle Wobbles:
    Cause: Handle nut is loose.
Solution: Tighten the handle nut securely.
