3.2 Mounting the Smoke Detector

For optimal performance and safety, follow these mounting guidelines:

  • Location: Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, inside each sleeping area, and in the hallway outside of sleeping areas.
  • Ceiling Mounting: The ideal location is on the ceiling, at least 4 inches (10 cm) from any wall.
  • Wall Mounting: If ceiling mounting is not possible, mount on a wall between 4 and 12 inches (10-30 cm) from the ceiling.
  • Avoid: Do not install near windows, doors, or air vents, as drafts can interfere with sensor operation. Avoid installing in kitchens, bathrooms, or garages where cooking fumes, steam, or exhaust can cause false alarms.
  1. Choose Location: Select a suitable mounting location based on the guidelines above.
  2. Secure Wall Anchor: Use the provided screws and wall anchors to secure the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall.
  3. Attach Detector: Align the smoke detector with the mounting bracket and twist clockwise until it clicks securely into place.

4. Operating Your Smoke Detector

4.1 System Modes

The SimpliSafe system operates in three main modes:

  • Off Mode: The system is disarmed. Sensors are inactive.
  • Home Mode: Designed for when you are home. Entry sensors (like door/window sensors) are armed, but motion sensors are typically disarmed to allow free movement. Smoke detectors are always active regardless of the system's arming status.
  • Away Mode: Designed for when you are away. All sensors, including entry and motion sensors, are armed. Smoke detectors remain active.

4.2 Testing the Smoke Detector

Regular testing ensures your smoke detector is functioning correctly.

  1. Initiate Test: Press and hold the test button on the smoke detector for a few seconds.
  2. Listen for Alarm: The detector should emit a loud alarm sound.
  3. System Confirmation: Your SimpliSafe Base Station should announce that the smoke detector is being tested, and you may receive a notification on your SimpliSafe app.
  4. Repeat: Test all smoke detectors in your home at least once a month.

4.3 Professional Monitoring

With a professional monitoring plan, your SimpliSafe Smoke Detector is connected to a 24/7 monitoring center. In the event of a smoke alarm, the monitoring center will:

  • Attempt to contact you and your emergency contacts.
  • If contact cannot be made or if a real emergency is confirmed, they will dispatch emergency services (fire department) to your home.
