3. Setup
3.1 Charging All Components
Before first use, ensure all components are fully charged. Connect the DJI Avata Intelligent Flight Battery, DJI FPV Goggles Battery, and DJI Motion Controller to their respective power adapters using the provided cables. A full charge for the drone battery can take approximately 3 hours.
3.2 Goggles Assembly and Connection
- Attach the four dual-band antennas to the DJI FPV Goggles V2.
- Secure the headband to the goggles for comfortable wearing.
- Connect the DJI FPV Goggles Battery to the goggles using the DJI FPV Goggles Power Cable (USB-C). The battery is external and can be placed in a pocket or secured to the headband.
3.3 Motion Controller Setup
Attach the lanyard to the DJI Motion Controller for secure handling during flight.
3.4 DJI Fly App and Calibration
Install the DJI Fly app on your mobile device. Connect your mobile device to the DJI FPV Goggles V2 using the DJI FPV Goggles USB-C Cable or V2 OTG Cable. The app is required for initial activation, firmware updates, and certain settings adjustments. Ensure the drone's compass is calibrated before flight. Intermittent loss of calibration or interference with the motion controller may occur, requiring recalibration.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Powering On/Off
To power on each device (drone, goggles, motion controller), press the power button once, then press and hold it for two seconds. Repeat this process to power off.
4.2 Immersive Flight with Motion Control

Image 4.1: User experiencing immersive flight with the DJI Avata and Motion Controller.
The DJI Motion Controller allows intuitive flight control. Squeeze the trigger to accelerate forward. Swivel your wrist to turn corners. The goggles provide a first-person view, enhancing the flight experience.
4.3 Flight Modes and Obstacle Sensing
The DJI Avata supports different flight modes. Downward obstacle sensing is available when using the DJI Motion Controller in N (Normal) Mode or S (Sport) Mode. The drone must maintain a distance of at least 0.25 meters from the ground for optimal sensing.
4.4 Video Recording and Stabilization

Image 4.2: Demonstration of video stabilization for smooth footage.
The Avata records 4K video at 60fps with a 155° FOV. It features flagship stabilization technologies, RockSteady and HorizonSteady, to ensure smooth footage. Note that the 155° FOV is available when the aspect ratio is 4:3 (2.7K@50/60fps or 1080p@50/60fps) or 16:9 (4K@50/60fps, 2.7K@50/60fps, or 1080p@50/60fps). HorizonSteady is only available in Normal mode FOV with a 16:9 aspect ratio and specific video recording specifications. RockSteady is unavailable when recording at 2.7K@100/120fps or 1080p@100/120fps.
4.5 Return to Home (RTH)
Familiarize yourself with the Return to Home (RTH) functions. This safety feature allows the drone to automatically return to its takeoff point, which is crucial in situations of low battery or signal loss.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the drone, goggles, and controller with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Ensure the camera lens and vision sensors are free from dust and smudges.
5.2 Propeller Inspection
Before each flight, inspect the propellers for any cracks, bends, or damage. Replace damaged propellers immediately using the provided screwdriver and screws. Ensure propellers are securely attached.
5.3 Battery Care and Storage
Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For long-term storage, it is recommended to discharge batteries to approximately 50-60% capacity. Avoid fully discharging or overcharging batteries, as this can reduce their lifespan.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 Signal Loss
The drone's signal can be blocked by obstacles such as concrete structures. If signal loss occurs, the drone may initiate Return to Home (RTH). Fly in open areas and maintain a clear line of sight between the drone and controller/goggles to minimize signal interference.
6.2 Calibration Issues
If the compass calibration fails or the motion controller experiences interference, attempt recalibration in an open area away from magnetic interference. Ensure the DJI Fly app is updated and connected correctly.
6.3 Short Battery Life
Aggressive flying at high speeds can significantly reduce battery life. Plan your flights to account for the 18-minute maximum flight time. Always monitor battery levels during flight.
6.4 Charging Problems
If a component, such as the motion controller, does not recharge, ensure the charging cable and power adapter are functioning correctly. Try a different USB-C cable and power source. If the issue persists, contact DJI support.
