Briidea 120W Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Transformer User Manual
Model: HPS-04
Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Briidea 120W Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Transformer (Model: HPS-04). This transformer is designed to convert 120V AC voltage to 12V AC voltage, making it compatible with various low voltage LED and halogen landscape lighting fixtures such as pathway lights, inground lights, wall lights, spotlights, and garden lights. It features multiple working modes including On/Off, Dusk-to-Dawn, Timer, and Astronomical Timer for automated lighting control.
Safety Information
- Always disconnect power before installing or servicing the transformer.
- Ensure the total wattage of connected lamps does not exceed 80% of the transformer's rated capacity (e.g., for a 120W transformer, do not exceed 96W).
- The transformer features built-in circuit protection for overload safety. If an overload occurs, power will be automatically disconnected.
- Do not submerge the transformer in water. While it has a waterproof body, it is designed for outdoor exposure, not submersion.
- Mount the transformer securely on a wall, ideally 12 to 48 inches (0.3m to 1.2m) above the ground.
- Use only 12V AC compatible landscape lighting fixtures.
- Keep children away from the transformer during operation.

Installation Guide
Follow these steps for a simple and secure installation of your low voltage transformer.
- Prepare the Cable: Remove approximately 1/2 inch (12.7mm) of insulation from both ends of your landscape lighting cables and twist the exposed wires together.
- Connect to Transformer: Open the transformer's cover to access the circuit board. Connect the prepared landscape lighting cables to the AC 12V_OUT terminals on the circuit board. Ensure connections are secure.
- Place Fixtures and Route Cable: Strategically place your landscape lighting fixtures in your desired locations. Route the low voltage cable from the transformer to each fixture, ensuring the cable is buried or hidden safely. Attach the fixtures to the cable as per their individual instructions.
- Mount the Transformer: Securely mount the transformer to a wall or suitable vertical surface using appropriate hardware. It is suggested to mount the unit 12 to 48 inches (0.3m to 1.2m) above the ground to protect it from ground-level moisture and debris.
- Plug In: Once all connections are made and the transformer is securely mounted, plug the transformer's power cord into a standard 120V AC outdoor-rated electrical outlet.

Operating Modes
The Briidea HPS-04 transformer offers four distinct operating modes to manage your landscape lighting. Use the 'M' (Mode) button to cycle through the modes and the 'T' (Time/Set) button along with the Up/Down arrows to adjust settings within each mode.
- On/Off Mode:
This is a manual mode where you can simply turn the lights on or off as needed. The LCD display will show the current time and status (ON/OFF).
- Dusk-to-Dawn Sensor Mode:
In this mode, the built-in photocell sensor detects ambient light levels. The lights will automatically turn on at dusk and turn off at dawn. This mode is ideal for continuous nighttime illumination.
- Timer Mode (Countdown Timer):
This mode allows you to set a specific duration for the lights to remain on after dusk. For example, you can set the lights to turn on at dusk and turn off after 4, 6, or 8 hours. Use the 'T' button and arrow keys to set the desired countdown duration.
- Astronomical Timer Mode:
This advanced mode uses a patented software algorithm. After inputting your local latitude and longitude into the transformer, it will automatically calculate the precise local sunrise and sunset times. The lights will then turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise automatically, adjusting throughout the year without manual intervention.

Figure 6: Demonstration of the Astronomical Timer mode, showing lights automatically turning off at sunrise and on at sunset based on calculated local times.
Refer to the LCD display and the accompanying quick start guide for detailed instructions on setting the time, date, and specific parameters for each mode, especially for inputting latitude and longitude for the Astronomical Timer.
Maintenance
The Briidea HPS-04 transformer is designed for minimal maintenance due to its robust construction and protective features.
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the transformer and its connections for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion. Ensure the power cord is not frayed and the plug is secure.
- Cleaning: Gently wipe the exterior of the transformer with a damp cloth to remove dirt or debris. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the photocell sensor (if applicable) is clean and unobstructed for accurate dusk-to-dawn operation.
- Overload Protection: The unit has built-in overload protection. If the lights flicker or turn off unexpectedly, check the total wattage of your connected lights to ensure it does not exceed 80% of the transformer's capacity. Disconnect power, reduce the load, and then reconnect.
- Environmental Protection: While waterproof, avoid direct high-pressure water spray. Ensure the mounting location provides adequate drainage and is not prone to standing water.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Briidea HPS-04 transformer, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Lights do not turn on. | No power to transformer; Overload; Faulty connections; Incorrect mode setting. | Check power outlet and circuit breaker. Ensure total wattage is within 80% capacity. Verify all wire connections are secure. Check operating mode and settings. |
| Lights flicker or turn off randomly. | Overload; Loose connections; Faulty bulb/fixture. | Reduce total load. Tighten all wire connections. Inspect individual bulbs/fixtures for damage. |
| Timer/Sensor not working correctly. | Incorrect time/date setting; Obstructed sensor; Incorrect latitude/longitude (Astronomical mode). | Verify current time and date settings. Ensure photocell sensor is clean and unobstructed. Re-enter latitude/longitude if using Astronomical Timer. |
| Difficulty setting up modes/timer. | Unfamiliarity with controls; Instructions unclear. | Carefully re-read the "Operating Modes" section and the quick start guide. Practice using the 'M' and 'T' buttons with short/long presses as indicated in the product's specific instructions. |
| Error code displayed. | Internal fault; Specific issue indicated by code. | Refer to the product's specific error code list (if provided in the original packaging). If no list is available, try power cycling the unit. If the error persists, contact customer support. |
If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Briidea customer support for further assistance.
