Model: RY40507

1. Safety Information

Operating any power tool, especially a chainsaw, requires strict adherence to safety guidelines to prevent serious injury. Read and understand all instructions before use.

General Safety Rules

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses or goggles, hearing protection, heavy-duty gloves, and sturdy footwear. A hard hat and leg protection (chaps) are also recommended.
  • Work Area: Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, children, and pets. Maintain a firm footing and balance. Do not operate in wet conditions or where there is a risk of slipping.
  • Kickback Prevention: Be aware of the kickback danger zone. Avoid contact of the guide bar tip with any object. Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands.
  • Battery Safety: Use only RYOBI 40-Volt batteries and chargers. Remove the battery pack when not in use, before cleaning, or when performing maintenance.
  • Proper Handling: Never operate a chainsaw with one hand. Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the engine is running.
  • Maintenance: Keep the saw chain sharp and properly tensioned. A dull or improperly tensioned chain increases the risk of kickback and injury.

WARNING: This chainsaw is a powerful tool. Improper use can result in severe injury or death. Always exercise extreme caution.

3. Setup

Before operating the chainsaw, proper assembly and preparation are crucial for safety and performance.

3.1 Guide Bar and Chain Installation

  1. Ensure the battery is removed from the chainsaw.
  2. Place the chainsaw on a flat, stable surface.
  3. Loosen the chain tensioning knob and remove the sprocket cover.
  4. Carefully place the saw chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face the direction of rotation (usually indicated by an arrow on the chain or bar).
  5. Align the guide bar over the studs and ensure the chain drive links fit into the guide bar groove.
  6. Replace the sprocket cover and hand-tighten the chain tensioning knob. Do not fully tighten yet.

3.2 Chain Tension Adjustment

Correct chain tension is vital for safe and efficient operation. A loose chain can derail, and a too-tight chain can cause excessive wear and damage.

  • With the sprocket cover slightly loose, use the chain tensioning knob to adjust the chain.
  • The chain should be snug against the bottom of the guide bar, but still able to be pulled freely by hand.
  • There should be no sag on the underside of the guide bar.
  • Once tension is correct, fully tighten the chain tensioning knob.

3.3 Filling the Chain Oil Reservoir

The chainsaw requires bar and chain oil for lubrication. Never operate the chainsaw without sufficient chain oil.

  • Ensure the battery is removed.
  • Locate the chain oil reservoir cap, usually on the top or side of the chainsaw body.
  • Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with quality bar and chain oil. Do not use motor oil or other lubricants.
  • Replace the cap securely.

3.4 Battery Installation

  • Ensure the chainsaw is off and the chain brake is engaged.
  • Align the RYOBI 40-Volt battery pack with the battery port on the chainsaw.
  • Slide the battery into the port until it clicks securely into place.
  • To remove, press the battery release button and slide the battery out.

4. Operating Instructions

Always follow safety precautions and proper operating techniques to ensure safe and effective use of your chainsaw.

4.1 Starting the Chainsaw

  1. Ensure the chain brake is disengaged (pulled back towards the front handle).
  2. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands: one hand on the front handle, the other on the rear handle.
  3. Press the safety lock-out button (usually located on the rear handle).
  4. While holding the safety lock-out, squeeze the trigger switch to start the chainsaw. The chain will begin to move.

4.2 Stopping the Chainsaw

  • Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop.
  • Engage the chain brake by pushing the front hand guard forward.
  • For extended breaks or when transporting, remove the battery pack.

4.3 Basic Cutting Techniques

  • Always use two hands: Maintain a firm grip on both handles.
  • Maintain balance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, ensuring stable footing.
  • Avoid kickback: Never cut with the tip of the guide bar. Always use the bottom or top edge of the bar.
  • Cutting small branches: Use a steady, controlled motion. Avoid forcing the saw.
  • Cutting larger limbs: Make an undercut first to prevent pinching, then complete the cut from the top.
  • Be aware of falling objects: Plan your cuts to ensure branches fall safely and away from you.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your RYOBI chainsaw.

5.1 Chain Sharpening

A sharp chain is essential for efficient and safe cutting. A dull chain will produce sawdust instead of chips and require more force to cut.

  • Refer to your chain's specifications for the correct file size and angle.
  • Sharpen each cutter uniformly.
  • If unsure, have the chain professionally sharpened or replaced.

5.2 Guide Bar Maintenance

  • Regularly clean the guide bar groove to remove sawdust and debris.
  • Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.
  • Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.

5.3 Cleaning and Storage

  • Always remove the battery before cleaning.
  • Clean the chainsaw exterior with a damp cloth.
  • Remove the sprocket cover and clean out any sawdust or debris from the chain and sprocket area.
  • Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children.
  • Ensure the chain is covered with the scabbard during storage and transport.
