Setup

The ZT-E4 Socket Tester comes with batteries pre-installed. To begin using the device:

  1. Ensure the device is clean and free from any debris.
  2. Press and hold the ">2S POWER" button for 2 seconds to turn on the tester. The LCD screen will illuminate.
  3. The device is now ready for use.

Note on Batteries: The device uses 2x 1.5V AAA batteries. While typically pre-installed, if replacement is needed, carefully open the back cover by unscrewing the screws. Be gentle as wires connect the front and back sections.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Wiring Test

To test the wiring of an electrical outlet:

  1. Plug the ZT-E4 tester directly into the electrical outlet you wish to test.
  2. The LCD screen will immediately display the wiring status and voltage readings.
  3. Refer to the "Interpreting Wiring Status" section below to understand the displayed results.

2. GFCI Test

To test a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet:

  1. Plug the ZT-E4 tester into the GFCI outlet.
  2. Ensure the wiring status is "CORRECT" before proceeding.
  3. Press the "GFCI TEST" button on the tester.
  4. If the GFCI is functioning correctly, the circuit breaker should trip, cutting power to the outlet. The tester's display will go blank or show no voltage.
  5. If the circuit does not trip, the GFCI is faulty and should be replaced or inspected by a qualified electrician.
  6. To restore power, reset the GFCI outlet by pressing its "RESET" button.

Figure 5: The ZT-E4 detects leakage in one second. A tripping GFCI indicates normal leakage protection, while no tripping indicates no leakage protection.

3. Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection

The NCV feature allows you to detect the presence of AC voltage without direct contact with the conductor.

  1. Hold the top part of the ZT-E4 tester near a wire, outlet, or electrical component.
  2. The NCV indicator on the screen will show a signal strength bar graph, indicating the presence and relative strength of the AC voltage.
  3. This is useful for quickly checking if a circuit is live or locating a wire breakpoint.

4. Interpreting Wiring Status

The ZT-E4's LCD screen provides clear visual indicators for various wiring conditions. The display shows voltage readings for Live-Neutral (L-N) and Neutral-Earth (N-E), along with symbols indicating the status of the Live (L), Neutral (N), and Earth (E) wires.

ZOTEK ZT-E4 Testing information comparison for wiring status

Figure 7: This diagram illustrates various wiring statuses displayed by the ZT-E4, including Correct Wiring, Neutral Wire Missing, Missing Live Wire, Ground Wire Missing, Phase-Ground Fault and Lack of Ground, Live Wire Only, Incorrect Wiring (live and ground wires connected incorrectly), and Incorrect Wiring (live and neutral wires connected incorrectly).

Wiring Status Indicators
IndicatorDescription
CORRECTLive and neutral wires are connected properly, and grounding is normal.
Neutral Wire Missing"N" symbol will blink to indicate the absence of the neutral wire.
Missing Live WireWhen the live wire is missing.
Ground Wire Missing"E" symbol will blink to indicate the absence of the ground wire.
Phase-Ground Fault and Lack of Ground"L" will flash to indicate the phase and ground wire connection error and the lack of ground.
Live Wire OnlyWhen only the live wire is connected and there is no neutral wire, only the wires with points are tested.
Incorrect Wiring (Live & Ground Reversed)Live and ground wires are connected incorrectly.
Incorrect Wiring (Live & Neutral Reversed)Live and neutral wires are connected incorrectly.

Maintenance

  • Keep the device clean and dry. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Store the tester in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • If the device will not be used for an extended period, remove the AAA batteries to prevent leakage and corrosion.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the device yourself, as this will void the warranty and may pose a safety risk.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions
ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Tester does not turn on.Low or dead batteries; power button not held long enough.Press and hold the ">2S POWER" button for at least 2 seconds. Replace AAA batteries if necessary.
No display when plugged into outlet. No power to the outlet; faulty outlet.Check the circuit breaker. Test with another known working outlet. If still no display, the outlet may be dead.
GFCI test does not trip the circuit.Faulty GFCI outlet; non-GFCI outlet.Ensure you are testing a GFCI outlet. If it is a GFCI, it may be faulty and require replacement.
Inaccurate readings.Poor connection; device malfunction.Ensure the tester is fully inserted into the outlet. Try testing another outlet. If issues persist, contact support.
