Operating Instructions

1. Starting the Fire:

  • Ensure your fire pit is placed on a safe, non-combustible surface away from flammable materials.
  • Start a fire in your fire pit using appropriate fuel (wood or charcoal). Allow the fire to establish and produce hot coals.

2. Preheating the Cook Top:

  • Place the griddle/grill top onto the fire pit.
  • Allow the cast iron surface to preheat for 5-10 minutes to reach optimal cooking temperature (approximately 400-500°F).

3. Cooking on the Griddle/Grill:

  • The cook top offers both a ribbed grill section and a flat griddle section. Choose the appropriate surface for your food.
  • Apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the surface before placing food to prevent sticking.
  • Cook food to desired doneness, monitoring temperature and adjusting fuel as needed.

  • Lower the cook top back into place and allow it to reheat before continuing to cook.

  • Place it on a safe, non-combustible surface away from children and pets to cool down.

Care and Maintenance

1. Initial Seasoning (Optional):

While the Cuisinart CHA-830 is pre-seasoned, an additional seasoning layer can enhance its non-stick properties and protect against rust. To season, apply a thin, even coat of high-smoke-point cooking oil (e.g., vegetable, canola, or flaxseed oil) to all surfaces. Heat the cook top on the fire pit or in an oven at 350-400°F (175-200°C) for one hour, then let it cool completely. Repeat this process several times for best results.

2. Cleaning:

  • Allow the cook top to cool completely before cleaning.
  • Scrape off any food residue with a plastic or wooden scraper.
  • Wash with warm water and a mild soap, using a stiff brush or sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners or steel wool, which can damage the seasoning.
  • Rinse thoroughly and immediately dry the cast iron completely to prevent rust.
  • Note: Although listed as dishwasher safe, hand washing and immediate drying are recommended for cast iron to preserve seasoning and prevent rust.

3. Re-seasoning:

After each cleaning, or if the surface appears dull or food begins to stick, re-season the cook top. Apply a thin layer of cooking oil and wipe off any excess. This maintains the non-stick surface and protects the cast iron.

4. Storage:

Ensure the cook top is clean, dry, and lightly oiled before storing. Store in a cool, dry place. The hinged design allows it to fold in half for compact storage.
