Operating Modes
The NF-513 features three primary scanning modes to adapt to various wall scenarios and detection needs.
1. Metal Detection Mode
This mode is designed to accurately locate the edge and center of metal objects such as rebar, steel pipes, and copper pipes. It can detect both magnetic and non-magnetic metals and is not affected by wall characteristics.
- Step 1: Properly hold the instrument close to the area to be measured. Move the instrument slowly. When the screen displays "metal", an attribute icon, strength of the received signal, and target metal distance/depth information will appear. When the sound is on, the instrument will make a "di" sound after it shows "metal". The closer the detected target metal is to the instrument, the stronger the signal and the more rapid the sound.
- Step 2: For center judgment, continue to move the instrument slowly. When the signal is stronger, it indicates the detected target metal is closer to the sensing area. When the signal reaches a certain intensity or the strongest point, the center mark on the screen lights up. After detecting metal, you can also move slowly through different directions and use the signal bar to become stronger to weaker to stronger to locate the target metal position.

Figure 3: Maximum detection depths for different materials: Magnetic metal (120mm), Non-magnetic metal (100mm), Wood (38mm), Live AC wire (50mm).
2. AC Detection Mode
This mode is specifically for scanning live (AC) firewires. It helps avoid danger when drilling or installing fixtures.
- To enter AC detection mode from non-AC detection mode, short press the dedicated AC button.
- Properly hold the instrument close to the area to be tested. If a wired live wire is found, a live icon and the received signal strength will appear on the display. When the sound is turned on, the "AC" will be broadcast followed by a "di" sound. You must detect the change in location back and forth to determine the precise location of the live wire. The closer the instrument is to the live wire, the stronger the signal and the more rapid the sound.

3. Wooden Wall Detection Mode
This mode judges the uniformity of the detected target material by scanning to locate hidden objects like wooden studs, light steel keels, and other structures behind plasterboard walls, bare wood floors, plywood, and coated walls.
- To enter wooden wall detection mode from non-wood wall detection mode, short press the dedicated wood button.
- It is strongly recommended to press the hand-held schematic diagram to hold the instrument close to the target surface and move slowly. When detected, it will be reported as "bone position", displayed in text, and indicated by a signal bar.
Automatic Calibration Detection Mode
- Step 1: Place the instrument close to the detected target surface according to the hand-held schematic diagram. The instrument will perform automatic calibration.
- Step 2: Once calibration is complete, move the instrument slowly in the area to be measured. When a foreign body is detected, the screen will display "bone position" and receive information such as signal strength. When the sound is turned on, the instrument will emit a "di" sound after broadcasting the "bone position". The closer the sensing area of the instrument is to changes in materials such as bone or grooves or the location of foreign objects, the stronger the signal, and the more rapid the "di" sound.
- Step 3: Lift the instrument to terminate the scanning detection and enter the interface to be calibrated. Close to the surface of the detected target again, recalibration and detection can be performed.
Manual Calibration Detection Mode
- Each time you enter the wooden wall detection mode, the default is the automatic calibration detection mode. After close to the surface of the detected target, when the color of the detected target surface is dark and cannot be calibrated, short press the "Manual" button to enter the manual calibration detection mode to force the instrument to calibrate. After the calibration is completed, slowly move the instrument in the area to be measured to scan detection.

Figure 5: Easy operation steps: 1. Automatic calibration, 2. Slowly move against the wall, 3. Find the location of the target.
System Settings
The NF-513 allows for customization of settings to optimize detection performance.
- Short press the "Settings" button to enter the system setting interface. Here you can set the detection sensitivity of the instrument, calibrate the metal detection mode, and view signal version information.
Set Sensitivity
- Short press the "Settings" button to select the sensitivity setting. Short press again to enter the sensitivity setting interface. You can set the sensitivity for the three detection modes (Metal, Wood, AC Voltage) separately to Low, Mid, or High. Use the arrow buttons to select the setting item, then press OK to adjust the sensitivity. Short press "back" to return.
Metal Detection Mode Calibration
Large-scale changes in temperature or humidity of the environment where the instrument is located can cause false alarms in metal detection or shorten the detection depth.
- Short press the "Settings" button to select metal detection mode calibration. Short press OK to enter the calibration interface. Press OK to start calibration, and short press "back" to exit the calibration interface after the calibration is completed.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate readings or false alarms | Improper calibration, environmental changes (temperature/humidity), or interference. | Perform a metal detection mode calibration. Ensure the device is calibrated on a clear section of the wall. Avoid using near strong electromagnetic fields. |
| Device not powering on | Low battery or power button not held long enough. | Charge the device using the provided USB cable. Press and hold the "back" button for at least 1 second to power on. |
| No detection in a specific mode | Incorrect mode selected or object is beyond detection depth. | Ensure the correct detection mode (Metal, AC, Wood) is selected for the target material. Verify the object is within the maximum detection depth for that mode. |
