1. Introduction
The PETZL GRIGRI+ is a cam-assisted blocking belay device designed for climbing, suitable for both gym and outdoor use. It features an anti-panic handle, making it particularly appropriate for learning and intensive use. The device includes a selector knob to choose between top rope and lead climbing belay modes and is reinforced with a stainless steel wear plate for durability. It is compatible with single ropes ranging from 8.5 to 11 mm in diameter.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Climbing is inherently dangerous. Improper use of this equipment can result in severe injury or death. Read and understand all instructions before use. Seek professional instruction if you are unsure about any aspect of this device's operation.
- Always perform a thorough pre-climb check of all equipment, including the belay device, rope, harness, and carabiners.
- Ensure the rope is correctly installed in the device according to the diagrams.
- Maintain constant control of the brake-side hand on the rope. The cam-assisted blocking feature is an aid, not a substitute for proper belay technique.
- Be aware of the weight difference between the climber and belayer. The anti-panic function may engage more readily with lighter climbers.
- Regularly inspect the device for wear, damage, or deformation. Discontinue use immediately if any damage is found.
3. Setup
Proper setup of the GRIGRI+ is critical for safe operation. Follow these steps carefully:
3.1. Opening the Device
To open the device, locate the side plate and pivot it open. The internal mechanism will be exposed, allowing for rope insertion.

3.2. Rope Insertion
Insert the rope into the device, ensuring the climber's side of the rope is on the side marked with the climber icon, and the brake-side hand is on the side marked with the hand icon. The rope should pass through the cam mechanism as indicated by the diagrams on the device.

3.3. Closing the Device and Attaching to Harness
Close the side plate securely. Attach the GRIGRI+ to your harness using a locking carabiner, ensuring the carabiner is properly locked. The device should be oriented correctly on your harness, with the climber's rope leading upwards and the brake-side rope downwards.

4. Operating Instructions
The GRIGRI+ offers versatile belaying options. Always maintain a firm grip on the brake-side rope.
4.1. Belay Modes
The GRIGRI+ features a lockable selector knob to choose between two belay modes:
- Top Rope Mode: This mode makes taking in slack easier and long belay sessions more comfortable.
- Lead Climbing Mode: This mode is optimized for lead belaying, allowing for smooth rope payout.
Select the appropriate mode before starting to belay.
4.2. Taking In and Giving Slack
To take in slack, pull the brake-side rope downwards while simultaneously pulling the climber's rope upwards. To give slack, slightly depress the handle while maintaining control of the brake-side rope. Practice these movements to ensure smooth and controlled operation.

4.3. Cam-Assisted Blocking
When the climber falls or weights the rope, the cam in the device automatically cinches down to arrest the rope. This cam-assisted blocking ensures a comfortable belay. Always be prepared to manually engage the brake-side rope.
4.4. Anti-Panic Handle and Lowering
The anti-panic function engages if the user pulls too hard on the handle during lowering, stopping the climber's descent. This feature is particularly beneficial for new belayers or when there are significant weight differences between the climber and belayer. To lower a climber, gradually pull the handle to release the cam, controlling the descent speed with your brake-side hand. If the anti-panic function engages, release the handle completely and then re-engage it more gently.

Video 4.2: A belay test demonstrating the GRIGRI+ device, specifically noting its performance with lighter climbers and the need to feed the rope through for smooth lowering in such cases.
5. Features
- Progressive Descent Control: The 3:1 mechanical advantage of the camming mechanism assists in smoothly controlling the rope and reducing lowering efforts, regardless of rope diameter.
- Cam-Assisted Blocking: Ensures a comfortable belay by automatically cinching the cam when the climber falls or weights the rope. Compatible with 8.5 to 11 mm dynamic single ropes.
- Anti-Panic Handle: An integrated safety feature that engages and stops the climber's descent if the handle is pulled too hard. Ideal for learners and situations with significant weight differences.
- Multiple Belay Modes: A lockable selector knob allows users to switch between top rope and lead belay modes, optimizing performance for different climbing styles.
- Steel Wear Plate: A stainless steel wear plate provides enhanced protection for the high-wear area of the GRIGRI+ (near the brake side of the rope), extending the device's lifespan during intensive use.
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your GRIGRI+ device.
- Cleaning: Clean the device with fresh water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before storage. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Inspection: Before and after each use, inspect the device for cracks, deformation, sharp edges, or excessive wear on the cam, side plates, and wear plate. Check for proper function of the handle and selector knob.
- Storage: Store the GRIGRI+ in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your GRIGRI+, consider the following:
- Anti-Panic Engages Too Easily: This can occur with very lightweight climbers or during rappelling. Ensure you are pulling the handle gently and progressively. If the issue persists, practice controlled lowering techniques.
- Difficulty Feeding Rope (Light Climbers): For lighter climbers, the device may require a more active feeding technique, where the belayer needs to push the rope through the device. Ensure the belay mode is correctly set.
- Rope Slippage: Verify that the rope is correctly installed according to the diagrams and that the device is attached to your harness with a locked carabiner. Ensure your brake-side hand is always on the rope.
If problems persist or you suspect a malfunction, discontinue use and contact PETZL customer support or a qualified professional.
