5. Installation
The following installation details are applicable for existing walls before tiling. Always consult with a licensed professional during preparation and installation. Do not cover any possible situation.

- Locate and Mark: Locate and mark the center lines of adjacent framing studs using a stud finder or by tapping the wall. Draw a level line between the two wall studs at your desired height for the niche.
- Trace and Cut: Trace the outline with a pencil, above the center line. Cut out a cavity on the wall board along the traced lines. Ensure the top and bottom lines are level.
- Frame Vertically: Level and fasten the surrounding framing to adjacent vertical studs. The dimensions should match the niche flange.
- Waterproofing Membrane: Glue a waterproofing membrane inside to seal the niche cavity and extend 6-10 inches to all four sides of the surrounding wall. Create a watertight seal cave.
- Apply Setting Material: Apply your setting material and set your tile, marble, or stone directly to the shower wall. It is best for tile to be symmetric around the cave. Tile the cave and right on the niche for a very clean look.
- Remove Protective Film and Seal: Remove the protective film from the tape. Apply an uninterrupted bead of silicon sealant from the inside corner of the niche to the edge. Ensure sealant is applied with a 1/4" thickness.
- Insert Niche: Insert the niche fixture into the cavity. Press the flange tightly and ensure the niche is plumb and level. Wipe off any excess sealant along the perimeter edges.
- Tape Flanges: Tape the flanges with wall to hold the niche in place until the sealant cures.
Optional: If the niche is very close to the shower head, apply silicone adhesive all around the niche to ensure an optimal waterproofing.
Important Notes for Installation:
- For newly constructed walls, start installation from step 3.
- If the wall recess is greater than the niche, attach framing studs to accommodate the niche.
- Building codes prohibit the use of water-resistant gypsum wallboard ("green board") as the tile backer in showers.
Wait for 48 hours before using the shower.
