ADAM Audio A7V

ADAM Audio A7V 7-inch Powered Studio Monitor

User Manual

Introduction

The ADAM Audio A7V is a high-performance 2-way powered studio monitor designed for professional audio production environments, including project studios and smaller control rooms. It features a newly-designed 7-inch woofer and ADAM Audio's X-ART ribbon tweeter, delivering a wide frequency response from 41Hz to 42kHz. The A7V incorporates DSP-based tuning capabilities, allowing users to fine-tune its acoustic response to match specific room characteristics. Its vertical orientation is optimized for nearfield monitoring, providing precise imaging and a tailored sweet spot.

Setup

Proper setup is crucial for optimal performance of your A7V monitors. Follow these steps to ensure correct installation and connection.

1. Placement

  • Orientation: The A7V is designed for vertical orientation. Place the monitors upright on stable surfaces.
  • Listening Position: Position the monitors to form an equilateral triangle with your listening position. The X-ART tweeter should be at ear level.
  • Room Acoustics: Avoid placing monitors directly against walls or in corners, as this can exaggerate bass frequencies. Utilize the DSP-based tuning for room adaptation.

2. Connections

The A7V offers both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA input options. Choose the appropriate connection for your audio interface or mixer.

  • XLR Input: For balanced audio signals, connect your source device to the XLR input. This is recommended for longer cable runs to minimize noise.
  • RCA Input: For unbalanced audio signals, connect your source device to the RCA input.
  • Ethernet Port: The Ethernet port is for remote control and DSP configuration via the ADAM Audio A Control software. Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer or network switch to this port.

3. Power Connection

  • Ensure the power switch on the rear panel is in the OFF position.
  • Connect the provided power cable to the IEC inlet on the rear panel of the monitor.
  • Plug the other end of the power cable into a grounded AC power outlet.
  • Once all audio connections are made, switch the power button to the ON position. The LED indicator on the front panel will illuminate.

Operating the A7V

The A7V features advanced DSP-based controls for precise sound tailoring. These controls are accessible on the rear panel and via the A Control software.

1. Room Adaptation Controls

These controls allow you to compensate for the acoustic properties of your listening environment. Adjustments can be made for Bass, Desk, Presence, and Treble frequencies.

  • Bass: Adjusts the low-frequency response. Useful for compensating for room modes or proximity to walls.
  • Desk: Compensates for reflections from a desk or mixing console.
  • Presence: Adjusts the mid-range clarity.
  • Treble: Adjusts the high-frequency response, particularly useful for the X-ART tweeter's output.

2. Voicing Options

The A7V offers different voicing presets to suit various listening preferences or tasks.

  • Pure: Provides a flat, uncolored frequency response, ideal for critical mixing and mastering.
  • UNR (Uniform Natural Response): Offers a more natural and musical response, suitable for general listening or tracking.
  • Additional custom voicings can be created and loaded via the A Control software.

3. Level Control

The Level knob on the rear panel controls the overall output volume of the monitor. Start with a low level and gradually increase to a comfortable listening volume.

4. A Control Software (Remote Control)

For advanced control and precise adjustments, download and install the ADAM Audio A Control software on your computer. Connect the monitor via Ethernet to access features such as:

  • Detailed EQ adjustments beyond the rear panel knobs.
  • Saving and recalling custom voicing presets.
  • Integration with Sonarworks SoundID Reference for automated room correction.
  • Firmware updates.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your ADAM Audio A7V monitors, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe down the cabinet. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp cloth with mild soap can be used, but ensure no liquid enters the speaker grilles or ports. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Dust Protection: When not in use for extended periods, cover the monitors to protect them from dust accumulation.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the monitors in a stable environment, avoiding extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the rear panel to prevent overheating, especially around the heat sink.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your A7V monitors, consult the following common troubleshooting steps before contacting support.

No Sound Output

  • Power Check: Ensure the monitor is plugged in and the power switch is ON. Verify the front LED is illuminated.
  • Volume Level: Check the Level knob on the rear panel and ensure it is not set to minimum. Also check the volume on your audio source.
  • Input Connection: Verify that the audio cables (XLR or RCA) are securely connected to both the monitor and your audio source. Try swapping cables if possible.
  • Source Check: Test your audio source (e.g., audio interface, mixer) with another device to confirm it is outputting sound correctly.

Distorted or Unclear Sound

  • Input Level: Ensure the input signal from your source is not too high, causing clipping. Reduce the output level of your audio interface or mixer.
  • Room Adaptation Settings: Incorrect DSP settings for your room can cause undesirable sound. Try resetting the Room Adaptation controls to their neutral positions or re-calibrating with A Control software.
  • Cable Quality: Poor quality or damaged cables can introduce noise or distortion. Try different cables.
  • Subwoofer Integration: If using without a subwoofer, very low frequencies at high volumes might cause distortion. Consider adding a subwoofer for full-range monitoring.

Red Light Indicator / Malfunction

  • A red light typically indicates a fault or protection mode.
  • Power Cycle: Turn off the monitor, unplug it from the power outlet, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and power on.
  • If the issue persists, contact ADAM Audio customer support.
