5. Installation Instructions
Safety First: Before attempting any installation or maintenance, ensure the lawn mower engine is off, the spark plug wire is disconnected, and the parking brake is engaged. Refer to your John Deere mower's owner's manual for specific safety precautions and detailed instructions for your model.
General Steps for Deck Belt Replacement:
- Prepare the Mower: Park the mower on a flat, level surface. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
- Remove Mower Deck: Follow your mower's manual to safely detach and remove the mower deck from the tractor. This usually involves disconnecting linkage rods, springs, and the PTO cable.
- Access the Belt: Once the deck is removed and flipped over, locate the old deck belt. You may need to remove belt covers or guards to access it.
- Note Belt Routing: Before removing the old belt, carefully observe or draw a diagram of its routing around all pulleys (engine, idler, and spindle pulleys). This is crucial for correct installation of the new belt.
- Remove Old Belt: Release tension from the idler pulley(s) and carefully remove the old belt from all pulleys.
- Install New Belt: Route the new Bubbacare GX20571 GX21833 belt according to the diagram you made or observed. Ensure it is seated correctly in all pulley grooves.
- Tension the Belt: Re-engage the idler pulley tensioner. The belt should feel snug but not overly tight.
- Reinstall Covers and Deck: Replace any belt covers or guards. Reattach the mower deck to the tractor, ensuring all connections (linkage rods, springs, PTO cable) are secure.
- Test Operation: Reconnect the spark plug wire. Start the mower and engage the PTO at a low throttle setting to ensure the belt operates smoothly without slipping or unusual noises. Disengage the PTO and turn off the engine before making any adjustments.
6. Maintenance
Regular inspection and proper maintenance can extend the life of your deck belt.
- Inspect Regularly: Periodically check the belt for signs of wear, cracks, fraying, glazing, or stretching. Replace the belt if any significant damage is observed.
- Keep Clean: Remove any grass clippings, dirt, or debris that may accumulate on the belt or pulleys. Debris can cause premature wear and slippage.
- Check Pulleys: Ensure all pulleys are clean, free of rust, and spin freely. Worn or seized pulleys can damage the belt.
- Proper Tension: Verify that the belt tension is correct according to your mower's specifications. Incorrect tension can lead to slippage or excessive wear.
7. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues after replacing the deck belt, consider the following:
- Belt Slippage:
- Check for correct belt tension.
- Ensure pulleys are clean and free of debris or grease.
- Verify the belt is correctly routed.
- Inspect the belt for glazing or wear.
- Excessive Noise (Squealing, Grinding):
- Confirm correct belt routing and tension.
- Inspect pulleys for damage, wear, or misalignment.
- Check for foreign objects caught in the belt path.
- Belt Comes Off Pulleys:
- Verify correct belt routing.
- Check for bent or damaged belt guides/guards.
- Inspect pulleys for wear, damage, or misalignment.
- Ensure the deck is properly attached and leveled.
