Flame King Propane Torch Kit User Manual

Model: YSN500K-IG

Heavy Duty Weed Burner, 500,000 BTU, Self-Igniting

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Flame King Propane Torch Kit. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.

The Flame King Propane Torch Kit is a versatile tool designed for various heavy-duty applications, including weed burning, melting snow and ice, removing parking lot markings and paint, thawing frozen pipes and equipment, melting tar and asphalt, repairing roofs, and various woodworking projects.

Safety Information

WARNING: Propane is highly flammable. Failure to follow these instructions can result in fire, explosion, property damage, personal injury, or death.

  • Always operate the torch in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
  • Keep children and pets away from the operating area.
  • Ensure all valves are closed before connecting or disconnecting the propane cylinder.
  • Before igniting, point the torch away from yourself, other persons, and any flammable materials.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety goggles, heavy work gloves, and close-fitting long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect your limbs.
  • Do not use the torch near dry vegetation, combustible structures, or in windy conditions that could spread flames.
  • Never leave an ignited torch unattended.
  • Check all connections for leaks using a soapy water solution before each use. Bubbles indicate a leak. Do not use if a leak is detected.
  • Store propane cylinders in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Do not modify the torch or its components. Use only genuine Flame King replacement parts.

Setup and Assembly

Your Flame King Propane Torch Kit arrives fully assembled and ready to use. Follow these steps to connect it to a standard liquid propane cylinder (sold separately):

  1. Ensure the flame control knob on the torch handle is in the "OFF" position (fully clockwise).
  2. Verify that the valve on your propane cylinder is closed.
  3. Connect the POL safety valve of the 10-foot hose regulator assembly to the propane cylinder. Note that POL fittings are reverse thread. Tighten by turning counter-clockwise ("Left Hand Tight"). The built-in handwheel tightener allows for tool-free connection.
  4. Once connected, slowly open the propane cylinder valve (1 full turn is typically sufficient for most tasks).
  5. Check all connections for leaks using a soapy water solution. Apply the solution to the connections; if bubbles appear, there is a leak. Close the cylinder valve, tighten the connection, and re-test. Do not proceed if a leak persists.

Operating Instructions

Once the torch is safely connected to the propane cylinder and checked for leaks, you can proceed with operation:

  1. Ignition:
    • Point the torch nozzle away from yourself, others, and any flammable objects.
    • Open the flame control knob on the torch handle about 1/8 of a turn (counter-clockwise).
    • Ensure the idle boost control lever is not pushed down (it should be in the idle position).
    • Press the Piezo Ignitor button to ignite the flame. If it doesn't ignite immediately, release the button, adjust the flame control knob slightly, and try again.
  2. Adjusting Flame:
    • To increase the flame intensity, slowly turn the flame control knob counter-clockwise.
    • For maximum heat output (up to 500,000 BTU), depress and hold the idle boost control lever. Release the lever to return to the idle flame.
    • To decrease the flame, slowly turn the flame control knob clockwise.
  3. Applications:
    • Weed Burning: Direct the flame at the base of weeds. You do not need to incinerate them; a brief exposure to high heat will rupture plant cells, causing them to wilt and die within a few days.
    • Snow/Ice Melting: Apply flame directly to snow or ice surfaces.
    • Paint/Marking Removal: Heat the paint until it bubbles, then scrape it off.
    • Charcoal/Wood Fire Starting: Use the torch to quickly ignite charcoal or kindling.
  4. Shutting Down:
    • Release the idle boost control lever.
    • Turn the flame control knob on the torch handle fully clockwise to the "OFF" position.
    • Close the valve on the propane cylinder completely.
    • Allow the torch to cool down completely before storing.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Flame King Propane Torch Kit:

  • Cleaning: After each use, allow the torch to cool completely. Wipe down the torch and hose with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the hose for cracks, cuts, or kinks. Check all connections for tightness. Replace any damaged components immediately.
  • Storage: Store the torch and propane cylinder separately in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames. Disconnect the hose from the cylinder before storage.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Torch does not ignite.
  • Propane cylinder valve is closed.
  • Flame control knob is closed.
  • Piezo ignitor is faulty or obstructed.
  • No propane in cylinder.
  • Open propane cylinder valve.
  • Open flame control knob slightly.
  • Ensure ignitor is clean and functioning. Use an external lighter if necessary (with caution).
  • Replace or refill propane cylinder.
Weak or inconsistent flame.
  • Low propane level.
  • Partially closed cylinder or torch valve.
  • Hose kinked or obstructed.
  • Nozzle partially clogged.
  • Replace or refill propane cylinder.
  • Fully open both valves.
  • Straighten hose.
  • Clean nozzle (ensure torch is cool and disconnected from propane).
Gas leak detected (smell of propane, hissing sound, or bubbles with soapy water).
  • Loose connections.
  • Damaged hose or valve.
  • Immediately close propane cylinder valve.
  • Tighten all connections.
  • Inspect hose and valve for damage. Replace damaged parts.
  • Do not use the torch until the leak is resolved.
