Setup
1. Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully unpack the Behringer Ultravoice UV1 and inspect it for any signs of damage during transit. Retain the original packaging for future transport or storage.
2. Power Connection
- Ensure the UV1's power switch is in the OFF position.
- Connect the supplied power adapter to the DC input on the rear panel of the UV1.
- Plug the power adapter into a suitable AC power outlet.
3. Audio Connections
The UV1 features a combination XLR/TRS input on the front panel and various outputs on the rear. Refer to the rear panel diagram (if available, otherwise describe) for output connections.
- Microphone/Line Input: Connect your microphone (XLR) or line-level source (1/4" TRS) to the INPUT jack on the front panel.
- USB Connection: Connect the UV1 to your computer using a standard USB cable. The UV1 will function as a 192 kHz USB audio interface.
- Analog Outputs: Connect the analog outputs of the UV1 to your mixing console, audio interface, or powered monitors.
- Headphone Output: Connect your headphones to the 1/4" jack on the front panel for monitoring.
4. Driver Installation
For optimal performance, especially on Windows systems, it is recommended to download and install the latest drivers from the official Behringer website. Mac OS X systems typically do not require specific drivers.
Operating Instructions
1. Powering On
Once all connections are made, press the POWER switch on the front panel to turn on the UV1. The power indicator will illuminate.
2. Input Gain Adjustment
Use the GAIN LINE knob to adjust the input level for your microphone or line source. Observe the LEVEL dB meter to ensure the signal is strong but not clipping. Aim for the green LEDs to light up consistently, with occasional yellow flashes. Avoid constant red (CLIP) indication.
- +48V Phantom Power: If using a condenser microphone, press the +48V button to supply phantom power. Ensure the microphone is connected before activating phantom power.
- LOW CUT: Activate the LOW CUT filter (80 Hz) to remove unwanted low-frequency rumble or proximity effect from your microphone signal.
3. Compressor Operation
The compressor helps to control the dynamic range of your signal.
- DRIVE: Adjusts the amount of signal sent into the compressor. Higher settings result in more compression.
- DENSITY: Controls the compression ratio and character.
- Monitor the GAIN REDUCTION (dB) meter to see the amount of compression being applied.
4. De-Esser Operation
The De-Esser reduces harsh sibilant sounds (e.g., "s", "sh" sounds).
- FREQUENCY: Selects the frequency range where the de-essing will occur (e.g., 4 kHz to 8 kHz for typical sibilance).
- THRESHOLD: Sets the level at which the de-esser begins to act. Turn clockwise to increase the threshold, counter-clockwise to decrease.
5. Enhancer Operation
The Enhancer adds harmonic content to improve clarity and presence.
- LF DETAIL: Boosts low-frequency harmonics for added warmth and fullness.
- HF DETAIL: Boosts high-frequency harmonics for increased clarity and sparkle.
6. Expander/Gate Operation
The Expander/Gate helps to reduce unwanted background noise when the signal falls below a certain threshold.
- THRESHOLD: Sets the level below which the gate will close or the expander will reduce the signal.
- RATIO: Determines the amount of gain reduction applied when the signal falls below the threshold.
7. Output and Monitoring
- GAIN OUTPUT: Adjusts the overall output level of the UV1.
- MIX (IN/PB): Blends the direct input signal (IN) with the playback signal from your computer (PB) for zero-latency monitoring.
- LEVEL MONITOR: Controls the volume of the headphone output.
8. Process Bypass
Press the PROCESS BYPASS button to bypass all processing (compressor, de-esser, enhancer, expander/gate) and hear the raw input signal. This is useful for A/B comparison.
Maintenance
The Behringer Ultravoice UV1 requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish or internal components.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating. Do not block ventilation openings.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the unit in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in its original packaging.
- Power Supply: Only use the power supply provided with the unit. If a replacement is needed, contact authorized Behringer service centers.
