2. Components Overview

Familiarize yourself with the key components of your LEKI Makalu FX Carbon AS trekking poles:

  • Aergon Air Grip: An ergonomic, lightweight grip designed for comfort and control, featuring an extended foam section for varied hand positions and a fixed strap for security.
  • Shaft Sections: Constructed from a combination of carbon (PRC 1000) and aluminum (HTS 6.5) for optimal strength-to-weight ratio. The poles consist of multiple sections that fold for compact storage.
  • Speed Lock 2 Plus: An external locking mechanism for quick and secure length adjustment of the pole sections.
  • ELD (External Locking Device) Folding System: A robust and easy-to-use system that allows the pole to collapse into three compact sections.
  • Dynamic Suspension System (DSS): An integrated shock absorption system located near the tip to reduce impact on joints.
  • Trekking 2.0 Basket: A standard basket designed to prevent the pole from sinking too deep into soft ground.
  • DSS Tip: A durable tip designed for secure grip on various terrains, incorporating the DSS.

3. Setup Instructions

3.1 Unfolding the Poles

  1. Hold the grip section of the pole.
  2. Allow the lower sections to drop freely.
  3. Pull the lowest shaft section until you hear an audible click, indicating the ELD folding system has engaged and locked the sections together. Ensure all sections are fully extended and securely locked.

3.2 Adjusting Pole Length

The Makalu FX Carbon AS poles are adjustable from 110 cm to 130 cm.

  1. Open the Speed Lock 2 Plus lever located on the upper shaft section.
  2. Adjust the pole to your desired length. Refer to the measurement markings on the shaft. A general guideline for proper pole length is that your elbow should form a 90-degree angle when holding the pole with the tip on the ground.
  3. Close the Speed Lock 2 Plus lever firmly. Ensure the lever is fully closed and the pole section is securely locked before use. Do not overtighten.

3.3 Adjusting the Strap

The fixed strap on the Aergon Air Grip can be adjusted for a secure fit.

  1. Insert your hand up through the bottom of the strap.
  2. Grasp the grip along with the strap.
  3. Adjust the strap length using the buckle until it fits snugly around your wrist without being too tight, allowing for comfortable support.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Proper Pole Usage Technique

  • Forward Motion: When walking on flat or gently rolling terrain, move your poles in opposition to your feet (e.g., left pole with right foot). Plant the pole tip slightly ahead of your body.
  • Uphill: Shorten your poles slightly for uphill climbs to maintain an effective push-off. Plant poles closer to your body.
  • Downhill: Lengthen your poles slightly for downhill descents to provide better balance and reduce impact on your knees. Plant poles further ahead.
  • Dynamic Suspension System (DSS): The integrated DSS will absorb shocks during use, reducing strain on your wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

4.2 Terrain Considerations

  • Hard Surfaces: The DSS Tip provides grip on various hard surfaces.
  • Soft Ground/Snow: The Trekking 2.0 basket helps prevent the pole from sinking too deeply. For deeper snow, larger baskets may be available separately.
  • Rocky Terrain: Use caution to avoid jamming pole tips between rocks, which can damage the poles or cause a fall.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your trekking poles.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in muddy or sandy conditions, wipe down the pole sections with a damp cloth. Ensure all dirt and debris are removed from the locking mechanisms.
  • Drying: Always allow the poles to dry completely before collapsing and storing them to prevent corrosion or mildew.
  • Storage: Store poles in a dry, cool place, ideally in their collapsed state.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all components for wear and tear. Check the Speed Lock 2 Plus levers for proper function, ensure the ELD system engages securely, and examine the tips and baskets for damage. Replace worn tips or damaged baskets as needed.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Poles not locking securely: Ensure the Speed Lock 2 Plus lever is fully closed. If the pole still slips, the tension of the locking mechanism may need adjustment. Consult the LEKI website or a qualified retailer for guidance on adjusting tension.
  • Poles collapsing unexpectedly: This indicates the ELD folding system or Speed Lock 2 Plus is not fully engaged. Ensure you hear a distinct click when unfolding and that the Speed Lock 2 Plus lever is firmly closed after adjusting length. Check for debris obstructing the locking mechanisms.
  • Tips wearing out: Pole tips are consumable parts. Replace them when they show significant wear to maintain optimal grip and safety. Replacement tips are available from LEKI retailers.
  • Baskets falling off: Ensure baskets are securely twisted onto the pole. If a basket is damaged or lost, replacement baskets are available.
