1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Tefal FV9850 Pure Max Steam Iron. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your appliance. Please read it thoroughly before first use and keep it for future reference.

2. Safety Instructions

  • Always plug the iron into a grounded wall socket.
  • Do not leave the iron unattended while it is switched on or connected to the mains.
  • Keep the iron and its cord out of reach of children and pets when it is switched on or cooling down.
  • Never immerse the iron, cord, or plug in water or any other liquid.
  • Do not use the iron if it has been dropped, if there are visible signs of damage, or if it is leaking.
  • Always unplug the iron before filling or emptying the water tank, and before cleaning.
  • The soleplate of the iron can become extremely hot and cause burns. Avoid direct contact.
  • Use the iron only for its intended purpose, which is ironing garments.

4. Setup

4.1 Before First Use

  • Remove any stickers or protective film from the soleplate.
  • It is normal for a small amount of smoke or odor to be produced during the first few minutes of use. This will quickly dissipate.
  • For optimal performance, fill the water tank and use the steam shot function a few times on an old cloth to clear any manufacturing residues.

4.2 Filling the Water Tank

  1. Ensure the iron is unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. Set the steam control to the 'Dry Ironing' position (no steam).
  3. Open the water tank inlet cover.
  4. Fill the tank with clean tap water up to the 'MAX' level indicator. Do not overfill.
  5. Close the water tank inlet cover securely.

Note: For areas with very hard water, it is recommended to use a mixture of 50% tap water and 50% distilled water. Do not use 100% distilled water as it can cause the iron to spit.

5. Operating the Iron

5.1 Ironing with Steam

  1. Fill the water tank as described in Section 4.2.
  2. Plug the iron into a suitable power outlet.
  3. Set the temperature dial according to the fabric type (refer to garment care labels). The iron features automatic steam adjustment for each fabric type.
  4. Wait for the indicator light to turn off, indicating the iron has reached the desired temperature.
  5. Adjust the steam control to the desired steam output.
  6. Begin ironing. For stubborn creases, press the Steam Shot button for an extra burst of steam.

5.2 Vertical Steaming

The iron can be used for vertical steaming to remove creases from hanging garments, curtains, or delicate fabrics.

  1. Hang the garment on a hanger.
  2. Set the temperature dial to the maximum setting.
  3. Hold the iron vertically, a few centimeters away from the fabric.
  4. Press the Steam Shot button repeatedly to release bursts of steam.

5.3 Automatic Shut-off

For enhanced safety, the Tefal FV9850 Pure Max is equipped with an intelligent automatic shut-off feature. The iron will automatically turn off if left motionless:

  • After 8 minutes when left on its heel rest.
  • After 30 seconds when left on its soleplate or side.

To restart the iron, simply pick it up or move it slightly. The indicator light will illuminate, and the iron will reheat to the selected temperature.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning

6.1 Cleaning the Soleplate

To maintain the smooth glide of the Durilium AirGlide Autoclean soleplate:

  • Always allow the iron to cool down completely before cleaning.
  • Wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth or a non-abrasive sponge.
  • Do not use abrasive pads, scouring powders, or harsh chemicals as they can damage the soleplate.

6.2 Descaling the Micro-Calc Filter

The Micro-Calc filter helps to prevent limescale build-up. It should be cleaned regularly, depending on the hardness of your water and frequency of use.

  1. Ensure the iron is unplugged and completely cool.
  2. Locate the Micro-Calc filter at the rear of the iron.
  3. Pull the filter out to remove it.
  4. Rinse the filter under running water to remove any accumulated limescale.
  5. Reinsert the clean filter back into its housing until it clicks into place.
