Nikon D90 DSLR Camera User Manual

Your guide to setting up, operating, and maintaining your Nikon D90 camera.

Introduction

Welcome to the user manual for your Nikon D90 Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera. This manual provides essential information to help you get started, understand its functions, and maintain your camera for optimal performance. The Nikon D90 features a 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor, D-Movie mode for cinematic HD video, and a 3-inch high-resolution LCD monitor.

Setup

1. Attaching the Lens

To attach a lens, align the mounting mark on the lens with the lens mount index on the camera body. Rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place. Ensure the lens is securely fastened before use.

2. Inserting the Battery

The Nikon D90 uses a Lithium-Ion EN-EL3e rechargeable battery. Open the battery chamber cover located at the bottom of the camera. Insert the battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, then close the cover until it locks. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

3. Inserting a Memory Card

The camera supports SD/SDHC memory cards. Open the memory card slot cover on the side of the camera. Insert the memory card with the label facing the back of the camera until it clicks into place. Close the cover securely. The camera will prompt you to format the card upon first insertion or if it's new.

The D90 features an 11-point autofocus system. You can select different focus modes:

  • AF-A (Automatic AF): Camera automatically selects single-servo or continuous-servo AF.
  • AF-S (Single-Servo AF): For stationary subjects. Focus locks when shutter-release button is pressed halfway.
  • AF-C (Continuous-Servo AF): For moving subjects. Camera continuously focuses while shutter-release button is pressed halfway.

Use the focus selector switch on the front of the camera to choose between autofocus (AF) and manual focus (M).

3. Recording Videos (D-Movie Mode)

To record video, set the mode dial to the D-Movie mode. Press the Live View button to activate Live View, then press the shutter-release button to start and stop recording. The D90 records 720p HD video at 24 frames per second in MP4 format.

4. Image Playback

Press the Playback button (usually marked with a triangle icon) to view your photos and videos on the 3-inch LCD monitor. Use the multi-selector (directional pad) to navigate through images. Zoom in or out using the zoom buttons.

5. Using the Built-in Flash

The D90 has a built-in flash. In automatic modes, the flash may pop up automatically in low-light conditions. In manual or semi-automatic modes, you can manually raise the flash by pressing the flash button. Flash modes include auto, fill-in, red-eye reduction, and slow synchronization.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Camera Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the camera body. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Lens: Use a lens brush to remove dust, then a lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Never touch the lens surface with your fingers.
  • Sensor: Sensor cleaning should be performed by a professional or with extreme care using specialized tools to avoid damage.

2. Battery Care

  • Always use the provided charger for your EN-EL3e battery.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.

3. Storage

When not in use, store your Nikon D90 in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods. Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.

Troubleshooting

  • Camera does not turn on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Check if the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
  • Memory card error: Reformat the memory card (this will erase all data). If the error persists, try a different SD/SDHC card. Ensure the card is not write-protected.
  • Blurry photos: Check your focus mode (AF-S for stationary, AF-C for moving subjects). Ensure sufficient light or use the flash. Check shutter speed; a faster shutter speed reduces blur from camera shake or subject movement.
  • Flash not firing: Ensure the flash is raised. Check flash settings in the camera menu. In some scene modes, the flash may be disabled.
  • Video recording stops unexpectedly: Ensure your memory card has sufficient free space and is fast enough for video recording.
