2. Safety Information

Failure to follow these safety instructions can result in serious injury, death, or property damage.

  • Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas. Operate the generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area, far away from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate indoors, in a garage, or in any enclosed space. The GM6000iED features CO DETECT technology, which automatically shuts off the generator if an unsafe level of carbon monoxide is detected. However, this is a backup safety feature and does not replace proper ventilation.
  • Fire Hazard: Fuel is highly flammable. Store fuel in approved containers in a well-ventilated area. Do not refuel while the engine is running or hot. Ensure no open flames or sparks are near the generator or fuel.
  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Do not operate the generator in wet conditions. Ensure all electrical connections are dry and secure. Never touch electrical components with wet hands.
  • Neutral Bonding: The GENMAX GM6000iED generator is factory-bonded to the frame. If you intend to connect this generator to your home's electrical system via a generator inlet, it is CRITICAL to convert the generator to a floating neutral configuration. Connecting a frame-bonded generator to a home's electrical system that is already bonded can create a dangerous condition with two bonding points. Consult a qualified electrician for proper installation and conversion to floating neutral if connecting to a home's electrical panel. Instructions for converting to floating neutral are available on the GENMAX website. If using the generator's outlets directly and not connecting to a home's electrical system, the factory-bonded neutral is appropriate.
  • Hot Surfaces: The generator's engine and muffler become very hot during operation and remain hot for some time after shutdown. Avoid touching these surfaces to prevent burns.
  • Moving Parts: Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from moving parts during operation.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the generator at all times.

4.2 Adding Engine Oil

The generator is shipped without engine oil. You must add the correct amount and type of oil before starting.

  1. Place the generator on a level surface.
  2. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick.
  3. Add 10W-30 engine oil. The oil capacity is approximately 0.12 to 0.21 gallons (15.36 to 26.88 ounces). Fill until the oil level reaches the cross-hatched area on the dipstick, without overfilling. It is recommended to check the dipstick frequently during filling.
  4. Securely replace the oil fill cap/dipstick.

4.3 Fueling the Generator

Always refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool.

4.3.1 Gasoline

  1. Ensure the fuel source selector is set to the 'Gasoline' position.
  2. Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
  3. Do not use gasoline containing more than 10% ethanol (E10). E15 or higher ethanol blends can damage the engine.
  4. Fill the fuel tank (3.6-gallon capacity) to the indicated level, leaving space for expansion.
  5. Securely replace the fuel cap.

4.3.2 Propane (LPG)

  1. Ensure the fuel source selector is set to the 'Propane' position.
  2. Connect the propane hose and regulator (included) to a standard propane tank and to the generator's propane inlet.
  3. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.
  4. Slowly open the valve on the propane tank.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Starting the Generator

Always ensure the generator is on a level surface and in a well-ventilated outdoor area before starting.

5.1.1 Electric Start (Push Button)

  1. Ensure the Main Switch is in the 'ON' position.
  2. Select the desired fuel source (Gasoline or Propane) using the Fuel Source Selector.
  3. Press and hold the 'START' button until the engine starts. Release the button once the engine is running.

5.1.2 Remote Start (Key Fob)

  1. Ensure the Main Switch is in the 'ON' position.
  2. Select the desired fuel source (Gasoline or Propane) using the Fuel Source Selector.
  3. Press the 'START' button on the remote key fob. The generator will attempt to start.
  4. If the generator does not start on the first attempt, wait a few seconds and try again.

5.1.3 Manual Start (Recoil Pull Start)

  1. Ensure the Main Switch is in the 'ON' position.
  2. Select the desired fuel source (Gasoline or Propane) using the Fuel Source Selector.
  3. Pull the recoil starter handle firmly and smoothly until the engine starts.

5.2 Connecting Electrical Loads

  1. Allow the generator to run for a few minutes after starting to stabilize.
  2. Plug in your electrical devices to the appropriate outlets. Do not exceed the generator's rated wattage.
  3. If an overload occurs, the circuit breaker will trip. Reduce the load and press the AC Reset button.

5.3 Low Idle Mode

Engage the 'LOW IDLE' switch to activate this mode. The generator will automatically adjust engine speed based on the load, reducing fuel consumption and noise during periods of low power demand. It will ramp up speed when more power is required.

5.4 Stopping the Generator

  1. Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
  2. If running on gasoline, move the fuel source selector to the middle position to run the carburetor dry. This helps prevent fuel-related issues during storage.
  3. Turn the Main Switch to the 'OFF' position.
  4. If running on propane, close the valve on the propane tank.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your generator.

6.1 Engine Oil

  • Initial Oil Change: Change the engine oil after the first 20 hours of operation.
  • Regular Oil Changes: Change the engine oil every 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
  • Use 10W-30 engine oil.

6.2 Air Filter

Inspect the air filter regularly and clean or replace it as needed, especially in dusty conditions. A dirty air filter can reduce engine performance and increase fuel consumption.

6.3 Spark Plug

Inspect the spark plug periodically. Clean or replace it if it is fouled or damaged. Refer to the specific spark plug type in the specifications section.

6.4 Storage

For extended storage, ensure the fuel system is properly prepared:

  • If using gasoline, add a fuel stabilizer or run the carburetor dry.
  • If using propane, disconnect the propane tank.
  • Change the engine oil.
  • Store the generator in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter. For problems not listed here, contact GENMAX customer support.

7.1 Engine Does Not Start

  • Check fuel level (gasoline or propane).
  • Ensure the fuel source selector is set correctly.
  • Verify the Main Switch is in the 'ON' position.
  • Check engine oil level; low oil shutdown may be activated.
  • Inspect the spark plug for fouling or damage.
  • Ensure the battery for electric start is charged.

7.2 No Power Output

  • Check if the circuit breaker has tripped. Reset if necessary.
  • Ensure the generator is running at the correct speed.
  • Verify that the connected devices are not exceeding the generator's capacity.

7.3 CO DETECT Shutdown

If the CO DETECT indicator illuminates and the generator shuts down, it means unsafe levels of carbon monoxide were detected. Move the generator to a more open, well-ventilated outdoor area immediately. Allow the generator to cool down before attempting to restart.
