Operating Instructions: Changing the Combination

This section details the process for both opening the safe and subsequently changing its combination using the YOSEC L-1 Change Key. These instructions are based on standard procedures for La Gard 3-wheel combination locks.

Part 1: Opening the Safe Using the Opening Index

Before changing the combination, the safe must be opened using its current combination. If the safe comes with a factory-set combination, use that. For a previously set combination, use the known code.

  1. Dialing the Combination:
    • Turn the dial to the LEFT and pass the first number of the combination four times, stopping on the first number on the fifth pass.
    • Turn the dial to the RIGHT and pass the second number two times, stopping on the second number on the third pass.
    • Turn the dial to the LEFT and pass the third number one time, stopping on the third number on the second pass.
  2. Opening the Lock: Turn the dial to the RIGHT until the dial stops. The combination lock bolt will retract, and the safe may be opened.

Note: For a previously set combination, ensure the lock is fully retracted (open) before changing. Verify the dial stops between 90 and 100 on the OPENING index.

Part 2: Changing the Combination on the Changing Index

This procedure requires the YOSEC L-1 Change Key. Ensure the safe door is open and the lock bolt is retracted.

  1. Prepare for Change:
    • With the safe door open and the lock bolt retracted, dial the existing combination to the CHANGING INDEX. For example, if the combination is 10-20-30, dial 10-20-30 to the CHANGING INDEX.
    • Stop on the third number (e.g., 30) on the CHANGING INDEX.
  2. Insert Change Key: Locate the keyhole on the back of the lock. Insert the YOSEC L-1 Change Key into the keyhole. If the change key does not go in, the wheels are not lined up. Re-dial the combination to the CHANGING INDEX and try again.
  3. Turn Change Key: Turn the Change Key to the RIGHT approximately one-quarter turn. Leave the key in the lock.
  4. Set New Combination: Select a new combination. Avoid numbers between 0 and 20 for the last number of the combination (forbidden zone).
    • Using the CHANGING INDEX, turn the dial to the LEFT and pass the first number of your new combination four times, stopping on the first number on the fifth pass.
    • Turn the dial to the RIGHT and pass the second number two times, stopping on the second number on the third pass.
    • Turn the dial to the LEFT and pass the third number one time, stopping on the third number on the second pass.
  5. Remove Change Key: Turn the Change Key to the LEFT until it stops. Remove the key.
  6. Test New Combination: Completely dial the new combination to the OPENING INDEX several times to ensure it works correctly before closing the safe door.
  7. Secure the Safe: After successfully changing and testing the new combination, retract the lock bolt several times before shutting and locking the vault or safe door.

Troubleshooting

  • Change Key Does Not Insert: Ensure the safe door is open, the lock bolt is fully retracted, and the existing combination has been accurately dialed to the CHANGING INDEX. The wheels must be correctly aligned for the key to insert.
  • New Combination Does Not Work:
    • Verify that the new combination was dialed precisely to the CHANGING INDEX during the setting process.
    • Ensure the change key was turned to the RIGHT, left in place during dialing, and then turned to the LEFT and removed correctly.
    • Test the new combination multiple times to the OPENING INDEX with the safe door open before closing.
    • Confirm that the last number of the new combination is not within the "forbidden zone" (typically 0-20).
  • Difficulty Dialing: Ensure the dial is clean and free from obstructions. Practice the dialing sequence slowly and deliberately.
